That first corner should be great during a race but I expect a log jam and carnage on an F1 standing start first lap.

Here are videos of the most recent FIA tests of solutions meant to make drivers safer from flying debris.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upqcj296l6w]FIA Institute canopy test - YouTube[/ame] -
Looking at those tests, I'd think the roll cage would be better in some ways. If the driver is under a full canopy, then they'll have to come up with some way of cooling the cockpit (it's hot in there), keeping it from fogging (and sweaty I bet), clearing rain from it (difficult enough with the visor), etc. All that might add weight and complexity, though some of it could be alleviated with the same special coatings the visors have, I suppose.
Also I think it would detract from the spirit of the sport somewhat. There are other venues I can watch with closed cars.
On the other hand, the cage could restrict vision somewhat, which could ironically cause the accidents it's seeking to protect the drivers from.
So many variables, I don't envy the decisions those guys have to make. -

The most consistent arguments I've read against all this roll cage / canopy talk are 1) it's already difficult to extract an injured driver from a cramped F1 cockpit, adding structure robust enough to deflect massive objects at high speed will make it almost impossible, and 2) F1 is open cockpit racing, full stop, and open cockpit racing is dangerous, deal with it.
1 is probably something they can figure out. If they go with a canopy there could be an instant release or something else so corner workers could remove it in an instant from the outside in case the driver is unable. On the other hand, it has to be fool proof and can neither jam nor self-release because of impact or incident.
2 is all about expectations. F1 is always changing (though much less recently than in the past) but the one consistency since the very beginning has been exposed heads and wheels. Cover either and some say it's no longer F1. -
A bit of racing history, just for fun

:cornut: Sir Sterling's sister Pat Moss raced Minis in approx the 64-66 time frame. She was quite good at it but settled down to marriage and children

Pat Moss is usually remembered for her rallying success in Austin Healeys - or 'big Healeys' as they were known and generally considered "real men's cars".
I don't think she ever settled down much - not long before her death in her 70s she got a speeding ticket...... while towing a horsebox. -

Actually Pat Moss' claim to fame was driving in rallies. Yep she could wheel a car whether on a track or stage road. She was quite a lady. -
QUALIFYING SPOILER BELOW
Looks like another Red Bull shutout in qualifying. *sigh*
Otoh, McLaren in second row and Ferrari in third should make an interesting podium chase for second and third. -
Some of us went out to breakfast and have the Qualifying on a DVR. -
Edited to include alert. Sorry.
I just read the news for qual, rather than watch. -

I see Lewis is back this time around.
Gotta say that this Tooned was more interesting then the race. What a snooze fest for me. -

I was angry when I realized I forgot to set my DVR but from what I've read it seems I didn't miss much.
I saw only the last lap of the re-air and heard one of the announcers say Alonso now has a lot of work to do to beat Vettel in the drivers' championship. I disagree. He's 13 points behind now but there are still three races to go. I think Alonso is up to the task as a driver and the key is the cars. Red Bull pulled ahead in the development race so it's not so much Alonso vs. Vettel; Ferrari have a lot of work to do to beat Adrian Newey. -
Lotus has picked up Kimi Räikkönen's 2013 contract option, meaning the driver will stay with the team for a second season.
The team confirmed the deal in a press release on Monday.
“I think my return to Formula One has gone pretty well and the team has done a very good job all year so far,” said Räikkönen in a statement. “To be honest, I didn't expect to be fighting for the drivers' championship this season when you look at where the team was in 2011, so it has been great to be on the podium so many times and to score points on a regular basis.
“I feel very comfortable with Lotus F1 Team and we share the same philosophy of racing. Continuing with the team was an obvious choice for me and I'm looking forward to making another step forward together next year.”

But, yeah, after that wasn't so good. Except for the good camerawork on the guys shedding the complete tread off their rear wheels after a puncture.... -
I did see the first lap, that was awesome.
I fell asleep about lap 20 after the first pit stops.
