Analysis: why Webber and Alonso were punished for 'taxi' ride Source - Analysis: why Webber and Alonso were punished for 'taxi' ride - F1 news - AUTOSPORT.com
Give us fans a break, in all sports there is a thing called "a no call," which is what the Barney Fife's of FIA should have exercised.... It was a great show of sportsmanship and a humanizing moment in an otherwise dry and technical race...
If you ignore Vettel running away out front the rest of the race was great. There was lots of passing, challenges for position, and different strategies. The racing was good even if the guy you like didn't win. My dad always said fishing is always good even if the catching isn't. I didn't agree with him on that. But I do feel that way about most racing.
I'll second that. I just want to watch some interesting driving and strategy. If there isn't a battle for the lead, I'm happy to watch any other racing on the track. Thanks to the number of cameras and views provided by F1 for broadcast these days there's almost always video feed available of something interesting and as long as they decide to show and comment on it I'm happy. I rarely care who wins so if there's actual competition up front I'm usually rooting for whoever isn't leading at the time or hasn't won lately. But though a lead battle does lend additional excitement, thanks to all the other entertainment I'm rarely bored without it. This is probably what keeps me interested. Seems to me F1 commentators do a pretty good job talking about whatever action is available (and trying to understand the strategy in the background) instead of focusing on a leader whose only real challenge is passing back markers. Maybe they learned that of necessity during the Schumacher era? :biggrin5: Things could get boring soon though even for an easily entertained person like me if teams shifting their focus more toward 2014 leads to less and less happening (behind Vettel) race after race. ---------- Yes, I know I'm a broken record on this subject. I'll try to resist bringing it up every chance I get.
/\ Agree..that said, did you hear Alonso's comment about making a gamble on strategy because as far as the championship is concerned, second or fifth didn't really matter? Side note: Some of the best racing at Singapore was Webber's charge up through the field and to the podium just before his car went..how do they say it.....kaput?!!
I hope this video doesn't get pulled. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBByzQBCSXE]SingaporeGP 2013: CCTV footage of the Alonso/Webber taxi incident - YouTube[/ame]
I hear all you guys whining about Vettel and I shake my head......do you not realize what you are seeing? When Senna was beginning to dominate, did you not cheer for him, or if you weren't alive yet don't you wish you had been there to see it? Well, you're here now, and you're seeing an amazing driver at the beginning of the height of his prowess.....and I think he's going to get even better. He already has the amazing ability to put a second or two a lap on the field on cold tires, in this race he also made his tires last 6 laps longer than anyone else, while increasing his lead. This guy is showing you things no one else on the grid can do, and you all are bitching about it? He's won the same number of races in the same number of starts as Schumi, no one else is even close to his record, and I think he will easily surpass Schumi in totals, I don't know if he'll best him in total championships won, but he'll be close. I think he's that rare combination of skills, youth, maturity and pure ability that rarely comes along, and I'm having fun watching him! The best proof of his ability sits in the sister car, where a far more experienced driver cannot match his performance in any area, qualifying, race strategy, race performance, tire maintenance or any other criteria. On another note, how in the world does Alonso and Ferrari manage those amazing starts? Think of where Alonso would be if his starts were pretty much the same as everyone else's.......6th, 7th? He sure wouldn't be second in the driver's championship.
I'm not dissing Vettel for winning or for being a skilled driver. I just didn't find the race all that interesting, even further back the field for some reason. He's proven his skill as a driver over and over, and no one can doubt that he's extraordinarily talented. I am curious though, if he could be that skilled in a car that doesn't suit his driving style so perfectly. Can he make a different car work as well? We'll find out next year, when areo might be less dominant and engine power will be the new thing to work with.
We get to like or dislike whoever we want, that's normal. Pick any sport and you'll find participants who are reviled. Again, normal, though I'm not happy with excessive ways some express their distaste. I admit I'm not a Vettel fan but I have specific reasons (which I won't be discussing) rather than hating him as a person in general simply because he's dominant. And I definitely agree with Hamilton (which is something I wish I didn't have to admit) re all the booing on the podium. Hamilton: Fans wrong to boo Vettel (racer.com)
Because someone says the race was a bit of a bore because Vettel and Team Red Bull buried the field again is not hate, it's just a fact. I for one think Vettel and Team Red Bull may very well be the best pairing in history, they are at least the very best under this set of rules...heck they are playing at a totally different level than everyone else right now.. I also expect them to be the team to beat next year with the new cars... But it would be swell to see some others step up and make a race of it, make Vettel have to beat them.. Can you imagine how frustrating it must me for Alonso with Ferrari behind him to basically have absolutely nothing for them. He even said yesterday on the podium that Red Bull is at such a different level that "second felt very much like a win for them." I got nothing against Vettel.
My point is I don't think it's the car.....Mercedes, Lotus and Ferrari have all qualified ahead of Vettel and yet he beat them. Webber is in the same exact car and he's mostly mid top tens..... I agree that next year will be a whole new ball game, and it will be fun to watch!
And I can guarantee you that the car is designed around Vettel. Drivers all have a different way of driving a car and it is obvious that they have different styles. Mark has said in the past that he can't seem to get the same race performance from the car. This is just more proof that the driver and car combination are what gets the championship done, not just driving.
Schumacher in the day was very quick to tell you that it was a complete package, not just one or two pieces that won Championships.... Takes a great driver and a great car and team... The greatest jockeys ever, got to that stature riding great horses with great trainers...never has one won the Kentucky Derby atop a mule.
