Nothing much to add here, nearly the same with a bit more detail. F1 set to race in New Jersey (autosport.com)
Two races vice alternating if this one is right...still just pure speculation at this point though. F1 set for New York in 2013! (grandprix.com)
The cat seems to be fully out of the bag now. Official confirmation expected in a little over 2.5 hours. New Jersey F1 race set to be confirmed (gpupdate.net)
I am still confused. I thought the Texas venue signed a deal to host a US GP for ten years, or so. Now NJ? That would seem like two races in one year?
Correct, 2 races in the US each year. Does it make sense? That's another question entirely. I think they've hit the ceiling on the max number of races in a year so this would mean yet another drop. Given Bernie's MO, he'll drop one of the traditional venues to make this one fit.
It will be interesting to see where this slots in the calendar. If it was just before or after the Canada race I would think the Canadian promoters will be up in arms. New York is only a few hours drive to Montreal. It surly would cannibalize the Canadian GP ticket buyer base. However, for logistics for the teams this is almost ideal. Especially if there was only a one week gap between the two races.
The pundits speculate that it will slot in next to Montreal so they can be back-to-back, aiding logistics, and the Austin race will align with the Brazil race at the end of the season for the same sort of reason.
Not me, and I'm among the insignificant minority who would like to see Monaco dropped. I know, blasphemy! Monaco is a sure source of income and that's the one and only thing Bernie cares about other than glamor, which is the other thing Monaco has in spades.
You're right. Don't know how I forgot about that. I think I dismissed his gripe as another of the casual threats he makes to try to worry a venue/promoter into thinking he has lots of other options and can take his wagon somewhere else anytime he wants so they'll stop complaining and agree to his price. He likes Monaco though, it fits his cultivated image, and I think many of the paying sponsors like Monaco as well. I'd be surprised to see it cut.
Monaco isn't high on the list. Have a look at Hungary or Turkey. Both good tracks but poor turnout for the events and the limited local sponsor money is probably a thorn as well.
You are correct sir. When I lived in Northern NJ there was the annual pilgrimage for the event. I suspect they will have to make it worth while for folks to make the drive from the tri-state area. The only other major city within driving distance is Boston. But even then NYC is closer.
I'm watching the press conference and I have to say it would be a real challenge for me to think of a more useless waste of my electricity. Aside from a quick view of the track map the rest has been little more than Gov. Christie of New Jersey and local politicians patting themselves on the back. I have my fingers crossed that there will be some more useful discussion when the politicians finally stop wasting oxygen and leave the podium.
