Like Monaco and Singapore, this race has the potential to be a 'halo' event for Formula One. Were you therefore able to negotiate a lower FOM fee?
We're paying for the privilege, and it is a privilege. Our sanctioning fees, god I wish we could negotiate them, but we're not allowed to.

This is a high profile part of the world with a lot of different sports teams and stadiums and other attractions. Does it need Formula One?
I think that it's been wanting it. If you look at F1, it's in every capital of Europe and capitals of Asia, it's just not here in the United States. I think it will very quickly rise to being on a par with the Monte Carlos, the French and the Canadian and certainly the Spanish and European grands prix.

We've heard from the governor of New Jersey and the mayors of these townships. Is it a concern that the main economic benefits will be enjoyed by New York and not New Jersey? I can guarantee you that all the teams, all international media and most international fans are going to stay across the waterâ€¦
I disagree. I think you underestimate the quality of the hotels adjacent north and south of this area. Certainly many people will stay in the city but it's 100,000 people, probably half of whom will come from outside the region. We have lovely hotels and restaurants just down the street here in Hoboken. The whole area will share. But in terms of taxes, restaurants and hotels it will preponderantly fall in New Jersey.

Are you confident this venue is going to be more appealing to fans than Indianapolis, Phoenix and the like?
Well you've gotta want to go there. I raced in the first, second and third years at Indianapolis. The first year the grandstands were full, the second year they were about 80 percent, the third year they were at 60 percent. People will come here for the same reason they travel to Shanghai and Singapore. There are about 26,000 people who travel with the sport, same people. Have you ever spent a weekend in Indianapolis? It's hard!

I have, several times - it wasn't that bad! There's a big building site where we're standing. Are they laying the foundations for the pit complex now?
Yes, that's correct.

Was starting work before the announcement strategic?
Yes.

How much work is needed to be done to the street track itself, in addition to fences and grandstands - presumably it will have to be resurfaced?
Yeah, if you hit a pothole coming down that hill you're gonna be somebody's Christmas dinner. Our obligation to these towns is to pave these roads to tabletop quality, and we'll do that at least every two or three years. We're going to undertake responsibility for these roads from next year. These roads have to be tabletop smooth, and paid for by us. There's not a nickel that will be paid by the state, the county or the towns. And we will be paying for homeland security, not the tax payer.

Chris Christie, the governor, said you've been talking with Bernie Ecclestone for "a number of months" and I suppose you could say the Magna Carta was written 'a number of months ago'... But given there has been talk of a New Jersey race for a couple of years, can we conclude it's been years of discussion rather than months?
Yeah, let's say years. It's been about two years. We had to design the track first, because you can't get permission to hold a race until you've done the engineering for a race.

Tom Cotter named President of New Jersey GP (gpupdate.net)

Tom Cotter, head of the Cotter Group which is regarded as one of the worldâ€™s largest motorsports marketing and communications agencies, has been named President for the upcoming New Jersey Grand Prix. Officially named the Grand Prix of America, the race with a New York City skyline backdrop will appear on next yearâ€™s F1 calendar.

â€œThe chance to make racing history doesn't come along often,â€ Cotter said at the site of the race, alongside the iconic Hudson River. â€œThat's Monaco in America. That's one of the most dynamic courses I've ever seen in terms of elevation.â€

57-year-old Cotter will spend the next several weeks gathering with new staff and discussing the logistics of the event. He will also meet with government officials. Prior to the New Jersey event, the Unites States Grand Prix is back on the calendar for this year from the brand-new, purpose-built Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

Ecclestone questions debut of New Jersey race (GPUpdate.net)

Bernie Ecclestone has hinted that New Jerseyâ€™s Formula 1 race may be joining the calendar a year later than planned. The Grand Prix of America, taking place on a road-based circuit alongside the Hudson River, is supposed to be making its debut next year but building delays could force a delay until 2014.

America has had no event in F1 since Indianapolis last hosted the United States Grand Prix, won by Lewis Hamilton, in 2007; that particular race title will be returning this November at the brand-new Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

Regarding the Grand Prix of America, which will boast a stunning backdrop of the iconic New York City skyline, Ecclestone told BBC Sport:

â€œMaybe the New York race will be in 2013. Itâ€™s a â€˜whenâ€™ â€“ 2013 or 2014.â€

In previous years, Ecclestone â€“ head of Formula One Management (FOM) â€“ has been known to issue warnings in order to ensure circuit projects are completed on time.

Another new race set to join the F1 calendar is the Russian Grand Prix, which will first be hosted in the Black Sea resort of Sochi in 2014. Next season, France is in-line to make a return with Paul Ricard, but that could depend on the outcome of the countryâ€™s upcoming general election. If the French Grand Prix does make a comeback, it is likely to be alternating with Belgium on a year-by-year basis.

Actually Bernie knows that this will be a stunning place to hold a Grand Prix, a place that can absorb all the pomp and circumstance and then some... The old creep is smart enough to know this is worth being a bit flexible on.

The Grand Prix of America held in the streets along the Hudson river? Priceless.

Ecclestone: New Jersey has to sort contract (GPUpdate.net)

Bernie Ecclestone has brought the Grand Prix of America back into the spotlight by claiming that the race has currently lost its contract for 2013. It remains to be seen whether this is a genuine threat or simply another hurry-up tactic by the FOM head.

With Formula 1 heading to Austin, Texas this November for the penultimate round of 2012, the New Jersey event will become the second American race on the calendar should it go ahead next year, as planned.

When F1 governing body the FIA sent teams the first draft of the 2013 schedule last week, it was confirmed that New Jersey had been pencilled in for the weekend of 14-16 June â€“ one week after Canada.

â€œ(Race organisers) have not complied with the terms and conditions of the contract, which is now gone anyway,â€ Ecclestone, of Formula One Management which is the F1 commercial rights holder, tells The Guardian. â€œThey don't have a contract.â€

The street race will now be a topic for this Fridayâ€™s meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC).

â€œWe are pretty close to the final deadline,â€ Ecclestone continues. â€œWe have got a world council meeting coming up. I think, if somebody got behind them, it could happen in 2013 because they have come a long way with the circuit.â€

Should the event go ahead at the Port Imperial venue, where development work continues to take place, it will boast the iconic New York City skyline as its backdrop.

The inaugural Grand Prix of America race in Northern New Jersey will be postponed one year until 2014, sources have confirmed to SPEED.com.

Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone and event organizers will make the announcement on Thursday, sources said.

The race, scheduled for June 16, 2013, will be pushed back a year in order for track organizers to finish the permitting process needed to complete the 3.2-mile road course along the Hudson River in Weehawken and West New York, N.J.

Among other things, track officials are waiting approval from Corps of Engineers to take control of property along the Hudson River where grandstands will be erected.

The three-day event is expected to attract more than 100,000 race fans and pump in more than $100 million to the local economy.

Last month, the New Jersey event was released on the official 2013 Formula One calendar, one of 20 races in 19 countries.

Autoweek had a article today about there being a night race in Thailand race for 2014.

Thailand's government sports authority says it has struck an in-principle deal to host a Formula One race in Bangkok in 2014, with negotiations ongoing about the hosting fee, according to a report in The Nation newspaper.

Kanokphand Chulakasem, governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand, was quoted as saying "Formula One has decided to include Thailand in its 2014 season calendar" with a race slated for November.

I guess they could not get all the toll booths built on the track in time for a NJ Grand Prix.

After all it did take them 15 years to build the AC express way and it only has one toll booth. Philly to AC in just under an hour.
