Back when the drivers legs were part of the crash structure of the car.
-
Slight improvement from the "sitting in the fuel tank" days. But not by a lot, safety-wise.

Fascinating discussion. Not so much about the factory itself as about the history of the Coopers, Jack Brabham, Bruce McLaren, etc. I didn't know those big names were so connected.

Perspective is important.
I guess I've never seen a Tyrrell P34 from this angle. Makes it much easier to explain the point/benefits of the small front wheels.
-
An interesting feature about the six-wheelers was how, in the wet, the first front wheels squeegee'd the road surface dry so that the second front wheels would be braking on nearly dry tarmac and the car could out-brake everyone else.
-
I wish the rules were still flexible enough for teams to experiment in that way.

Every once in a while one of us posts a famous photo of a couple F1 cars getting the air over a crest at the Ring. Then we have a brief discussion about whether it's real or 'shopped. This won't answer the question but it will certainly make it clear to anyone who doesn't already know that F1 cars definitely did fly at the Ring...esp. the bit at 4:35 - 4:49 :eek6: .

Those guys had large attachments for sure. What a place.

And no safety belts, better to get thrown out than burn.

Seems they were airborn at Spa in the '50s too, though not nearly as spectacularly.
