Mark I believe Nathan is correct in his response post # 10. I say this because about 3 months ago(?) I saw a FB friends suggestion referencing you! :confused5:
Hot on the heels of this thread there was a bit on the PR - Newswire (Yes, Lynn, that is one of my many sources for "this stuff") entitled WatchGuard Lists Most Risky Web Apps I'll only quote the relevant parts.
It's a jungle out there! Maybe I don't get these odd requests because I don't play any of the games or join any groups? I have never gotten a friend request from anyone not related or not personally known to me, but I do know that others have and I wonder if it's joining the groups that triggers it? I do get pages of suggestions of "friends of friends" and once in a while I find someone in there I know, but if I don't I just delete them - no biggy. I never understood the Twitter thing, so I'm not there and probably won't tweet - ever. One thing I do find interesting is just how much you can learn about someone (if they put such info up) once you get into their site as a friend - that is scary! So I don't put hardly anything up of a personal nature....
This is my experience also. I severely limit who and what can see my stuff. But it is the best way for me to stay in touch with old friends and family.
The amount of information out there on all us is staggering. There are many a day I wish for a name such as Bill Smith. Having a unique name such as mine really narrows the search. (hears the mad rush as everyone heads off to Google me). I'll spare you the work, you'll find mostly car, aquarium and food related stuff. You can find my Grilled Tuna W/Mango/Passion Fruit Salsa recipe here. See that I came in 542nd of 820 in the 2005 ADA International Aquatic Plants Layout Contest at Aquatic Plant Central, another site I am a moderator of. Even find the transcript of a talk I gave in 1998 on Reefs.org about why it is good to develop a rapport with your Local Fish Store. Yep, there is a lot out there about all of us.
Just be vigilant and keep the privacy settings ramped up. NEVER give your credit card number or other sensitive info to those sites or anyone that you aren't 100% sure. If you think "Do I know this person well enough to give them anything?" and the answer is no, then don't! I used to laugh when a telemarketer would ask me to verify my SS# or a CC#. Then I would politely tell them to F off and hang up.
I'm with you. Never been there, never will. I do agree with Nathan, on the point that a business almost has to be there. Jim
If you have teens in your care you should be at least facebook aware. I find they will express themselves much more freely on facebook than they ever will face to face. Yes most of their stuff is silly nothings, but this stuff is important to them. If you what to know what they are thinking about, facebook will offer some insights. I care about them so I am at least facebook aware.
I got a bunch of Birthday wishes the other day on FB. I enjoy the contact with friends from the old country. I ignore/block things I don't want to deal with. I go on FB maybe a couple of times a week. Mark
We had a 200 gal. After a coule of moves I got tired of moving it. I might do it again when I settle down in my final house.
Holy cow..... 50 and 200 gallon aquariums..... Ahhhh..... Do the seals on these things leak??? I don't even want to think about 200 gallons letting go in a room.
My wife is very much into aquatic gardening. We have two outside ponds and some very big koi. Well, she does. I just dug the holes for the ponds. Jim
On a related note: don't give FB your email password either. Oh, and all of your passwords should be: 1- different 2- 7 characters including numbers, letters, and squiggly bits 3- not your car, spouse, pet's name, or even a word that can be found in the dictionary. Yes- I live with a computer security expert
These days my aquatic leanings are towards planted tanks that are highly aquascaped in the Takashi Amano type school. Note quite on this scale though. Currently I have a very small tank, 36cm X 22cm X 26cm, constructed of low iron glass, that offers better clarity than the greenish tinged tanks most people have. It also rimless and lit with a 27w 8000K bulb designed for plant growth. The tank and light fizture are pictured below. Inlet and outflow piping is all glass as well and a small canister filter keeps it all in check. Right now the tank houses some Malaysian Trumpet Snails and moss. After this coming summers travels I'm gong to sit down and create a new aqauscape with the intention of entering the Winter 2012 Planted Tank competitions. I've had fish rooms before with up to 50 tanks where I was breeding FW aquatic shrimp. I've also bred show quality guppies, discus, angelfish and African cichlids. For years I was big into Reef Tanks and had a business in servicing tanks in homes and businesses. The largest reef I every designed and built was 500 gallons. My degree is in Marine Ichthyology which I used in working in fish stores. In high school I was a volunteer at the National Aquarium in Baltimore where some of the displays I had a hand in building are still in use today. So yeah, I'm into aquariums.
