I haven't put one in the MINI yet, whereas I had one in my VW for years. I think it is most useful at the track because it is very hard to hear the exhaust when wearing a helmet thus difficult to "feel" the proper time to shift.
I do know that with my driving position it would be difficult to see the light if mounted as per the good Dr's instructions. I can not really see the top of the tach now. Do you know if it can be mounted lower on the tach?

Sorry to have been away for a bit...
We've got two versions of the shift light: One with I/O and one without. Here's a basic run down of the features:
- RGB LED so any color and sequence you want.
- Gear dependant shift points. But we've found some cars without the friggin' speed wire. I don't know what MINI was thinking....
- Can do some data logging with a laptop plugged in (just RPM and speed, if you hook that up).
- 4 digital outputs that can be programmed to go based on RPM and/or speed.
We have one user who used the digital outputs to set up a two stage IC spray system.
And yes, the clip can be mounted at any orientation on the tach. It fits both the single tach and dual gauge cluser on the R50/R52/R53 as well as the tach on the R55/R56/R57. It can be used on the second gen new Mini, but there is no vehicle speed signal, so all stuff is RPM only.
Supergimp has one on his car, I think. I sent him one to beta for an auto tranny.

Have one in my car and used it at Road Atlanta this past weekend!

Matt, I am not that creative. What else could it be used for?

Well for you...
you could set it up so that the back-light on an LCD would turn on in your rear view so that anyone behind you would be blessed with your nutsack photo from the Nuts every time you either hit red-line or, even more annoying, when you roll to a stop.
It does have the potential to automatically enable things like WI and a 4 stage Nitrous system. If someone came up with an active wing, it could control that too!
You could use it to disable rear lights when you're going extralegal speeds on the freeway...
You could force on the radiator fan at high RPM low speeds to proactively give extra cooling....
It's only limited by your imagination....

The first option does appeal to me on a very basic level.

Perfect, as this eliminates my view problem. -

Ralph at Helix is just getting done putting one of these in an Evo VIII.
He seems pretty happy with it...

Though I also am seriously considering the "Nutsack Mod".
Little digital picture frame in the rear window... done... -
