This stuff is way too complicated anyway. I'm just glad my camera does it for me :p

I need to get a balls-to-the-wall DSLR camera. Anybody want to lend me a couple grand for a few years? :ihih:

Yes, it depends on the capabilities of the camera. My camera allows me to choose which parameter (aperture, shutter speed) to change when performing the HDR. If the light is good, then changing shutter speed might be the choice, but if it's dark, then changing aperture to get the required EV margins would be appropriate.
Being able to make 3 exposures in 0.3seconds, and with almost no camera movement, aided by the mass of the camera and lens system, HDR is as easy as setting the EV range.

So, the idea is to shoot 3 or more shot's with different exposures. One correct, at least one over and one under. (any recommendations on how much over and under?) Then blend the various elements together using the correctly exposed elements from each exposure and eliminating the over and under exposed pieces?

That's exactly what it is. How much over and under is up to you, if the scene has really deep shadows and blown out areas, you might want to push it farther. You can also combine as many images as you want to help blend it which can come in handy.

I usually do -2, 0, +2, and if that's too much then I'll adjust it in LR and then export it to Photomatix.

    <--- taking notes

Been using the full manual on my Olympus high end phd camera and moving f stops to cover a full +/- 3.0 ev in multiple steps. Ok results but I'm going to try the shutter speed approach. My camera also has a 3 shot bracket mode (.jpeg only though) with a +/-1 ev max range -probably done with shutter speed. I got this result (after some levels adjustments in ps) with it:

The flower colors are fairly accurate but the rest lacks the punch because there aren't any real dark areas and the f-stop was fairly low.
