Ok, i know the ATI is the general recommend crank damper for the mini.

I know ATI is used in NASCAR and race cars all over the place.

I did a bit of internet research and found that in a race situation it seems like ATI is the way to go. It also seems that the difference is...

The ATI is tuned for a specific resonance / dampening and that tuning can be different for different power output.

The fluid damper is not tuned to a specific resonance / dampening it dampens more throughout the frequency range.

In my mind i see ATI race car and Fluid daily driver.

Most of the information is for high powered V8 and they all seem to go ATI while the high revving honda guys go Fluid, endyn swears by them.

Has anyone used the fluid? What are everyone though?

    -Jonathan

    PS

i also know the whole fluids are not allowed in NASCAR but we aren't driving at 10,000rpm for hours are we ;)

There is a fluid dampener on mine, works great, much smoother!! Got it from RMW!

    .....just my 2 cents.

ATI like you read is the best and I know lots of folks who run them on thier daily drivers. Summit racing as well as Jeggs performance seem to have the best price on them for the Mini.

I run the ATI pulley. OEM failed on track around 90,000 miles. 8 track days on the ATI and no issues. It has some bolts that stick out farther than oem, and those shredded my brake ducts, but that's not the pulley's fault. Keith at Werkin Mini knows a lot about the ATI pulley.

Went with the ATI too when my OEM gave up at like 60K miles. Obtained with the help of Way Motor Works and OutMotoring.

    -Jonathan,

You sorta answered your own question about the two in your opening thread.
And a very good point about most 99.9% of us MINI drivers...

And this is a very good point as well.
    Your quote:
"i also know the whole fluids are not allowed in NASCAR but we aren't driving at 10,000rpm for hours are we"

I have used and owned both ATI and Fluidampr for years on various engines. Testing the relative performance is a bit difficult but I have personally tested on a controlled engine connected to a Engine Dyno doing a back to back comparison run of different bolt on parts found NO difference in the output of the engine worth mentioning. I would say flip a coin find a registered dealer of either and call it a day. You can't go wrong with either one of these units.

Currently one of my MINIs engines I use an ATI

    ^ This.

Nothing wrong with either one. The fluid is cheaper and Ian Stewart was running one on his National Championship Mini, so that was good enough for me.

Conversely the ATI is a tick lighter, so you really can't go wrong either way.

I'll sell you either one you end up wanting but I recommend the ATI over the fluid damper.

So how would someone actually measure something like that? Do you have the equipment for measuring them scientifically? Like these guys:

Noise and Vibration Analysis and Measurement

I would have thought that BMW would have really thought this one out, as smoothness was one of their number one goals in these cars. Hence all the soft rubber bushings they used in the suspension, ultimate performance was sacrificed for smoothness? No?

Purely my opinion and one gleaned from my own Butt Dyno Jim, so tell Lynn for me please.

    Thanks

So then you really don't know do you. I personally use a solid pulley design used by hundreds of million miles of other MINI owners. BTW, I think Lynn already mentioned he uses a ATI. So go tell Jan for me please.

    Thanks

    ....just my 2 cents.

So since 99% percent of us MINI owners don't track their cars this makes sense how? 2 cents

not quite sure what the bickering is about, we have run both type pulleys and the fluid damper WILL cover a wider band of dampening. It is ALSO HEAVIER...... we worked with PRW to make this damper. It will definitely smooth out the engine. We also ATI, it's whatever floats your boat and your pocket book
