It is. But physics, is.... well..... physics. You got the correct explanation regarding the errors in your reasoning and dismissed it. There are a lot of people who have been at it longer than you or I.

    ^^This, again.

There is only one other top mount IC I know of proven better than the GP, and it's not the Forge. And if you think the GP IC is expensive, this one will twist your twin berries many times over.

its not like people haven't been trying to find the perfect top mount IC since, like, 2002....

The GRS Intercooler proved to be effective. A bit spendy at £399.99 + options and shipping across the pond.

The Forge looks a lot like the GRS. What about

Has anyone tried one of the Direct Flow IC?

Navarr......in all honesty the IC tech has reached it's limit with the R53 as the OEM location severely restricts what can be done. No one has been able to develop an IC that works better than the OEM or GP one.......period.

I understand the mounting location restricts the performance of the intercooler, but there is more to look at than just it's cooling ability. Pressure drop is also another important aspect of intercooler performance. Honestly, when I installed the Forge IC, I was just looking for the cooling aspects of it when I realized after driving with it that it actually provided me with more low end power. This was an unexpected benefit that prompted me to do this review, even though I knew I would get the response that I have been getting from the hard core GP users/supporters. I think we all get so caught up on the cooling part that we miss the rest of the picture.

Obviously, the standard IC could be improved on otherwise, BMW wouldn't have came out with the GP version. Even looking at the GP IC, it seems to have been a cost/effectiveness compromise judging from the fact that they welded extentions onto a standard IC to add additional rows instead of developing entirely new tooling for a very limited number of cars.

Like I said, I'm not trying to say that I've found the perfect IC or even one that performs better than the GP. I'm just giving my account of what my experience is. I know someone here in Dallas that actually runs a GP unit and may see if he'd be willing to swap with me for a week so I'll have first hand experience with one.

^never tested them. My hunch is that they're gimmicky. You want that space under the cooler to flow as much air as possible.

Indeed! DOS did it right on the first try, and had actual thermal/mechanical engineers design the thing, they were just too far ahead, and too far out of peoples price range, in a small market to make the sales aspect work. :(

Lol, Just to be clear, my suggestion was not to run the stock IC without the diverter, my suggestion was for the guys that track their cars to remove them between sessions on the track to allow the heat to escape the end tanks. When it time to hit the track again, put the diverter back on and see if the heat soak recovery time quickens.

    Machinist turned engineer... yes.
Until you crack something from the drastic heat cycles.

At high altitude, I'd go turbo. Thankfully I'm at sea level.

Two more pieces for the intake and we'll see how the TVS 900 does with the FMIC. I'm hoping for 300WHP (may be too optimistic) with reasonable temps (shouldn't be a problem).

Like Sprintex syndrome... It is expensive, sounds cool, and the boost gauge says you are getting more boost, so that is interpreted by your wallet-minded brain as you are getting your moneys worth of power. In actuality with a Sprintex, all of that money is giving you a cool sound, and more boost, but more heat than can be dealt with by even the casing of the blower, the seals, and everything on the outlet side of the blower... In all actuality, there is no power gain due to the shortfalls and buildup of heat but your mind hears that new whine, and sees the needle of the boost gauge going further up so you think it is faster. Sure you might rip one good pull when you first strap it to a dyno, and yes it might show it is better than stock for that run before the truth comes out as it heats up.

Moving away from Sprintex Syndrome, you are bringing up a part that has been around a LONG time. Its been tried and tested by hundreds of MINI owners, and been shown time and time again to not even offer any performance gain over the stock I/C by the honest modders. Sure, in your mind you are seeing that boost needle, and the temp gauge do their thing, and your mind is trying to justify your purchase, but until you strap the car to a dyno and run it against the stock I/C back to back as fast as you can pull the 12 bolts and swap them out you will never know for sure. Or you can take the advise and experience of others for what they are worth. Hundreds of people with the same conclusion against one with the opposite doesn't mean that the hundreds are wrong, or that you are right. ;)

The DOS guys never claimed they made more power. They did claim, and rightly so, they had the data to back it up, that they maintained power to a much better degree than stock.

Only way to solve it is to dyno it for an extended period. Virtually every other IC has failed this test. You give theoreticals why it MIGHT be better, but those same theoreticals MIGHT just make it worse. Forge, to my knowledge, has never shown any data, unlike DOS. Until it's out there, all we have is to take your word for it. I'm not trying to be nasty, but we've been down this road before too many times with IC's and other products, and it will take hard data before anyone is going to bite.

My guess is it's no better than stock, might be worse. None of us have the definitive proof one way or the other. And when that's the case, most of us will take a pass.
