My mother's reaction to more than 10 years of rationing was that as kids we were given something called 'Hollywood Cake' (a chocolate fridge cake) for special occasions - in retrospect I think she chose this as every single one of its ingredients had been rationed, so it was like the ultimate sin indulgence.

Edit: OK, Showtime had "Shelly Duvalls' Faerie Tale Theatre" in the 80's which explains all the costumes and the crazy 80's hair and outfits!
