If you're getting "very little" in your catch can, is it really doing anything for you? Just curious for your thoughts....

How much you get depends on the humidity and temperature, more water in the air, more water in the oil catch can.

I talked to the shop foreman at my local MINI dealership today, he said he hasn't seen any problems associated with oil catch cans on engines that have come through the shop.

I love your OCC setup. Is that the BSH OCC?

Ya that's the BSH set up. And, thanks for the compliment... This is one of their first editions and doesn't have a dipstick. While the new ones may make it a bit more user friendly, I just remove the hose with the silver dot and suction the can. It's easier that way since the drain plug is hard to access as mounted. What I will likely do is drill and tap a hole on top so I can make it an easier inspection. Not'a biggie as it is though....... The whole process takes less-than-a-full beer.:beer

As for the amount I get and it's worth... All I know is that anything I can trap before it gets into the intake is a bonus. Just my humble O...

It looks great. Installing an OCC is definitely on my list of mods and the BSH looks best IMO.

I have several friends with R53's and we all run OCC's. You would be amazed at the differences we see in what each can collects. Some get enough to warrant emptying the can on a monthly basis, most do it at the oil changes (like me), and some can go a full year w/o emptying it.

Even if you don't get much material at all, it is better than allowing it back through the intake system.

I am using the Ebay OCC with a bit of velcro strapping to hold it in place in the same location as firebro. I just pull off the hoses and unstrap, then dump it out. Be sure you are using some kind of baffle/filter in the can as it will greatly increase the efficiency of the can. I use some copper/stainless steel wool in mine.

Here is a pic of my install. Disregard the red Alta can as I am no longer using it.

That's a really small photo. Could you put up a bigger one of your installation?

I'm just asking Dave, but how do you know you don't have any build up? From what I've read, one has to actually look inside to tell.

I was installing my DDM GP Intercooler Diverter and noticed the OEM Alarm Control Unit Module was mounted in the same spot as the OCC on ScottinBend and Firebro17. I guess when I do install my OCC I will have to find a different location for the OCC. Any ideas?

In the pic you can see where I had my Alta mounted. It is a much shorter can tho, so you would need a smaller can.

You might get it to fit next to the coolant tank.

Ok, I've read all these seafoam threads and I'm still a non believer. I have always driven my MINI's 30 to 35 K a year. My 2004 MCS had 106 K on it when sold, no problems and never seafoamed. My 2009 JCW has 58 K on it, no problems, never seafoamed. I have an open mind, but based on my driving habits this still sounds like snake oil to me.

Firstly.... The BSH can does have a baffle and prevents any sloshing of the caught gunk from passing thru into the intake. Kinda cool and the reason I chose it at the time.

Checkers.... Your choice of mounting location may differ depending on your choice of cans. My suggestion is to mount it where it will allow you to access the connections (take a second look at mine) without having to run hoses all over the engine compartment. You may be able to mount it in the void to the right of where all the steel lines are, between the firewall and the cowling (right behind the MINI on the valve cover). It would require you to make your own mount, but would work nicely there. I suggest that you keep from mounting it directly above the exhaust manifold, which is why I am suggesting that (since you can't use the stud I did) as an alternate location to where I mounted mine...

Best'a luck! Would love to see your finished product.

You can get a lot of other mods with the savings from getting a cheap ebay can. In regards to functionality, there is no difference.
