i was thinking of upgrading to 20x8" wheels. what are your thoughts on this.

the tire size to follow would be 225/30R20.

let me know what you guys think, these are not "baller" wheels there flatblack.

Unless it's for show or you have billard table smooth roads 20" wheels on a MINI is a bad idea. You need some sidewall to absorb some of the stuff out there. It's to easy on the 1st gen MINIs to bend or mushroom the tops of the strut towers. 20" wheels with 30 series tires allow that to happen really fast.

BTW, I moved the thread to the 1st Gen Wheels and Tires area and edited the title to make it a little more obvious what the question is. It is my experience that a clear title that conveys the subject will draw readers and more assistance.

    Agree with Nathan.
Since many MINI owners, maybe even most believe 18s are too big for the same reasons mentioned above, I would think that the consensus on 20s would be that they are way too damn big. Maybe if you didn't actually drive the car 20s would be fine.

I recognize that big wheels are the trend and I'm hopelessly out of sync, but I also think the large wheels hinder performance, all that unsprung weight and mass is harder to control, and would upset the fine handling of our cars. On top of that, I wonder if they would even fit, or if there would be interference with the suspension.

Practical considerations aside, my opinion is they would look cartoonish......now if that's the look you're going for, then more power to you.

It also makes the big brakes on our cars look tiny....

To me they would just look wrong, like putting dubs on a 50's or 60's era car.

18's on an R53 is really the 'max'. anything more than that and it looks silly. There are pics out there with MINI's on 20's....look before you commit to anything.

    Instead of S-Lites, they're S-narrows? :D

I know it's down to personal style and taste, and far be it for me to impose mine on someone else's car - but I'd look before you spend, for sure.....

I have 18's and wouldn't dare go taller. Wanting to buy some 17's just to gain some sidewall..

but he,y to each his own...

Thanks for the input guys, the car with 20s would be a general show set up the look I was going for is defie the odds, most people also said 13s couldn't fit on the 1 gen minis and I did it for the last show and amazed some people. I work for a high end parts dealer so to obtain parts is rather easy for me! I liked hearing your input, my local mini club fourm took 4 days of bumping to have one person answer! So thanks again!

So do you have any pic's of the wheels you are considering in the 20"? They must be custom since I wouldn't think there would be a lot of call for 4x100's?

so, bigger is cool? :frown2: how about nice wheels being cool? I had custom painted HRE's for a 'show set' and drove on 16" SSR's with sticky rubber. The HRE's saw about 500 miles total before I sold the car.

It could be done, but i think it would look bad doing anything but sitting still, on bags. It would essentially have to nearly be at stock height I would assume, to roll on 225 and 8".

that blue one above has got to be on adjustable suspention i would assume.

and aside from bags or the like, youd definately need a nice set of Porsche brakes behind them, to fill the void.

My stock S brakes already look much to small for my 17s lol.

blow those up 3" and itll look like a wagon wheel lol

AND another thing, based on MetalMans comment about 4 lug. ANY 4-lug 20s are going look dumb as well. So change to 5 when you slap on the 6 pot brakes

thats the 20" it comes in 4x100.. and there is actually like 13-15 styles of 4x100 20" wheels that look quite good.

im still searching my archives of pictures to fine the ones with the 13's on. i will hopefully come acrossed them soon!
