:cornut: This scenario has been repeating itself for 4 billion years. Man has only been here about 100k yrs. Yes we may be helping it along but the same cycle for 4 billion yrs. I don't think that we are to be blamed for the entire debacle. And just FYI it's no longer 'Global Warming' but 'Climate Change' and yes some scholars say that this is a prelude to the next 'Ice Age.'

Let's have science for the pursuit of discovery ... for truth ...and not for political agendas on either side.

It's a real shame that science has become politicized....or that scientists would bend to a political agenda ..or merely would work to maintain their funding.

No offense intended, but I doubt that anyone on here is qualified in climate science....we tend to listen to the "news" outlets that reflect our personal beliefs... (myself included) ...as biased as they may be.

Let's hope that we make the right choices for our children and grandchildren.

All that being said...fabricating results to maintain the flow of money....etc. It does seem to be a stretch that a large majority of scientists from so many competing countries ( 20+) would agree with some form of the global warming models if it weren't a reality. Russia, France, Germany and the US agreeing? On anything? And where do we all get the information to form our personal opinions? The media ... Which has an agenda ..not to provide the facts, but to make money selling advert time.

When previous generations figured out that the US air quality was bad and getting worse...they reluctantly took the long view, and made tough choices that would not show results within their lifetime. Air quality 50-60 years ago? In most cities...awful. And now? Not bad. I am hoping that we take the long view and not force the following generations to clean up our mess.

When Copernicus published his papers that proved the earth circled the sun, (and not the other way around) he was excommunicated because his theories contradicted the prevailing church dogma. The establishment hated him. Politicizing science has been around for a long time.

Yeah and Dogma was an excellent movie.

The fact is yes we are messing up the planet but until someone gets other countries like China, Japan and others to do something it's going to keep getting worse.

The end is near and by near I am talking a Million or 2 years.

If we wait for other countries make the first move then we are screwed. No one is saying that the "end" is near... But making the wrong choices... or delaying making the tough choices because they are just too difficult or that they cost too much "now" ...may cause a much heavier social / financial burden for future generations.

As for those other countries...let's stop sending them our jobs, money, and technology. That might put a dent in their carbon footprint.

It take more energy to make and transport paper bags than plastic ones and the plastic bags are recyclable. Not to mention cutting down all those poor trees just for a sack.:eek6:

I use some nice fabric bags I got from LOWES of all places. :p (Only a buck each)
They are very strong and they last. I can put lots of heavy stuff in them and they don't rip like paper or the plastic crap bags.

Since I am the one that has to carry everything into the house. :smile5:

But when you bury a paper bag, you sequester carbon....and a new tree is planted...
Win...win...if the bag is recyled/reused ....extra use...if it is burned...it is the same as burning a wood chip....renewable fuel....

Isn't discussing/arguing about which single-use disposable grocery bag is 'more green' getting dangerously close to the question about the number of angels that fit on the head of a pin? Isn't anything reusable better? We may yet have to work out how to go back to reusing things like glass jars and bottles - a system that used to work satisfactorily in most countries at one time.

And my oddball environmental impact issue is pedal cycles - I am an enthusiastic cyclist but was fascinated to see a study (Australian, I think) some years ago that suggested that cycles aren't any better than cars for environmental impact. The calculation went that the embodied energy (used to produce a cycle) is significant and a lot of cycles are bought, ridden once or twice and then sit on the garage wall. It was estimated that the average lifetime mileage for all pedal cycles was 200 miles and over that distance, the embodied energy makes them 'less green' than a car.

Now there's always a get-out clause and I recently replaced my last bike after 15,000 miles of use, so I'm not too worried about this issue - indeed my old cycle went to a local voluntary scheme where old cycles, or usable bits of unusable cycles, are shipped to Africa for further use. But then there's the energy of shipping them to Africa, so you can't win.....
