Does anyone know how to put a custom map onto the GPS. I have a Garmin nuvi 1300. I have googled it but I still cant figure it out. I would like to believe you can do it??? I have a map I did on goggle and put it into google earth. not sure how to input that into the GPS. thanks
I too would love to do that. Unfortunately the gap from confuser to NUVI is a large one for me. How cool would it be to create a map on gargle & then use it on your NUVI. Nirvana ...
The 13xx series can not do custom maps. It can however take a gpx file and convert it's route to waypoint markers. What this means is your map has points in it that tell you when to turn, those points would now be destinations that you would have to select manually at each turn.
The Nuvi 1300 does not accept routes. The 765 and 775 look to be the only ones where you can plan routes and store them. Will hold up to 10 routes. The one to contact about this is AGranger. I know he has done this a few times and has some routes for things like the Metroplex MINI Waco Run and the MOTD drives he has led.
I need to learn to do that. It would be a wonderful thing for sure. Now to check out the 800, 765 & 775 series.
thanks for the input. I do have a etrek Garmin but I have to manuely draw the route on the pc then upload it into the garmin. it is a pain but I guess it is all I have. Thanks everyone for your thought.
If you go to the Garmin site and do a search on their products, narrow it down to those that can do multi stop routing. My experience with doing the maps in Google has not been good due to the differences in the map data used by Google vs Garmin. Differences of only a few feet will cause the Garmin to do things like throw in extra U-turns and stuff. But perhaps they have improved it since I last tried that. I have much more success using Mapsource (the Garmin software) to generate the gpx files to load on the gps unit. It is some work, but I've become fairly efficient at it.
The 13xx series does support custom POIs though. It's more work than having a GPS with custom routes supported, but there is a work around. You create custom POIs at locations along your planned route. Numbering them in order is a good idea. Then you use each custom POI as a destination, one at a time in numerical order. The main drawback to this is the fact you can't string the POIs together into a route. Once you arrive at a POI, you need to tell it a new destination, the next POI on your numerical list. As far as actual map data, Garmin has a custom mapping program that can take any paper map and turn it into a Garmin compatible map. It only works with certain devices. http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/onthetrail/custommaps
I've been playing with GPS MotionX iPhone app that looks to do a lot of what I seem to be looking for. I can create a route with Google Maps then email it to a certain address to be loaded onto my iDevice. It also will track a route allowing one to reproduce it and even email it to others. I have most of the river run mapped on the phone now. All until the tow truck that is.
The 1450 can do custom routes also. There is a nice thread I started here that might help. Free MapSource alternative - Garmin Nuvi Forum
