I understand what you are saying; but I'm trying to determine the source in this change in behavior of my car. In the first 190,000 miles or so, never once did it require waiting for the system to prime. Only in the past year have I noticed this condition, and ONLY when the tank is low.

Probably something in the system that isn't holding the pressure like it used to. Check valves are usually in the pump itself.

Here's a different approach - seen on a DeLorean site, but same idea - just need to put one of those between the line that leaves the tank and fuel rail

Brand new VDO fuel pump installed over the weekend. Problem solved, case closed!

The good thing is, your fuel pump didn't totally fail and leave you stranded like mine did a few years ago on a club drive.
