Each generation is different. I would drive both the Gen1 and 2 cars to get an idea of what you like. My R53 and R58 are worlds apart but I love them both. They are a blast to drive. My wife doesn't let me drive her convertible, the only time I drove it was when I brought it home and put a bow on it. It was a birthday present, she deserved it.
A R53 and R56 would be a better comparison. The R58 has a different setting position and the window has a different angel. The previous owner did a lot of mods to it. It is way faster than my R53 but I have not done as many mods to the R53.
Don't be afraid to get what you want both gens are great cars. As I said take care to get a good one.
The war between the gens can get heated, it just shows the passion the cars bring.

P.S. won't mod it......yea sure we all said that

I have a Gen 1, '03 Cooper. While it cannot compare speed or powerwise to our 2 MCSes, it has its own agility and is a blast to drive. It is so nimble and I would think that that will be the same for you and your non-S Countryman.

High miles on MINIs tends to show how durable they are. I remember going to a British car Day a few years back and meeting a guy with an '02 MCS which had 350k miles on the clock! So, 130k shoukld not deter you from buying that car.

Correct, the HPFP is on the Cooper S only.

I guess it depends on how strong the "jump" was but it's more than likely normal. They are a little stiffer than your typical grocery getter. At least in the Cooper S it is. Also, the steering is even stiffer in our 2011 than it was in our 2009.

Thats a first Gen Cooper. That is probably the most reliable engine around. The S would have Intercooler on top of the motor and a supercharger on the front.

That actually is a nice car - non-sunroof too which is hard to find these days.

    Personally, I'd keep looking.

First, if you're hauling kids, I would think a Clubman would be important--I can't imagine trying to put anyone or anything in the backseat of my hatch. My dog rides back there, and he loads through the back.

You don't say what your budget is, but that car doesn't look like a bargain, it looks like a money pit. Take your time, do lots of reading, decide on what model/year/options best suits your needs, then use the internet and take your time to find the best possible car for you that you can afford. Don't let your itch cause you to make a rushed decision that'll cost you more later. It took me almost a month to find mine, but I got a great deal on a solid car that's perfect for me.

It seems to me that you're still kinda all over the map--Gen 1 vs Gen 2, hatch vs clubman, S vs Justa… keep researching until you narrow those decisions down. Getting the right car will be worth the effort.

Yeah, I realized that yesterday. I do really want a Clubman, but I don't know if my budget will allow it right now. I may have to skip on a Cooper for now and make it a long term budgeting goal.

I think we are hitting that time these cars are beginning to go up in value. Nice JCW and any low mile R53 are starting to go for more money than just 2 to 3 years ago.

I bought a super clean 29k R53 slicktop in Florida in Dec 2016 for $8k - not going to happen in 2019 any longer. My son has been looking for a "daily" driver R53 around $5k and it's hard to find anything that doesn't need major reconditioning and has 100+K on the clock. The fact hat he wants a black with white top car doesn't make the search any easier

Miles, condition, service records? If it is just a boost leak why din't the seller fix it? Maybe he likes losing money by selling a broken car? Just being the devils advocate here.

what makes you think we care????:D Ok we do, we are a bunch of mini nuts! Welcome to MA
If there is a dealer near you you can give them the vin and they should be able to print out the options. Also they may be able to give you some of the maintenance records.

What year and model is it?

You may want to have a pre-buy done on the car. Minis are great but you don't want one that has been abused.

In that case I would stay with an R53 2002-2006. The later models, 05-06 would be best. 2007 convertibles were still first gen cars so that would be ok. @Dave.0 is mostly corect about the N14 engine in the 2007. The only way I would touch one with a n14 was if it was low mileage and I knew the history.
My R58 has a N14 motor but but it’s a JCW and the first owner Mark took very good care of it.

The N14 has a problem with carbon build up on the intake valves. It has to be blasted clean, if this is not taken care of it can cause problems. They just take more care.

Will you be doing your own work?

Welcome to MA. I would suggest posting a link to the car if available. As with all used cars, its key to understand the history. That said, good group of folks here who know and can help. :D

These are two that I was planning on going to see this weekend. This was also when I was looking for 07s, but now I'm unsure. I don't mind putting a little bit of work into them, but I'd rather not have another immediate expense after purchasing the car.

One thing I was looking forward to was heated seats and push-start. Not that these are deal breakers, but were they even available on 1st Gen? I've only noticed heated seats on 07+, but the console setup is slightly different so I may have just not known where the switches were.
