Hey Lee, give Aaron a call at Outmotoring. He is in Knoxville, but I'm sure he knows all the shops who work on MINIs. Bet he could point your son in the right direction.

Price sounds high... Only 3 bolts holding it in place... Easy access on top right of the engine...
May take a special tool to disconnect the fuel line IIRC....
I think you are getting poked....

I did it over a weekend when the shop was closed...
I probably had 10 hours in it total...
Cleaned the intake and replaced the seals while I had it apart..
Borescope view of one of the piston...

If I had been home and had some time I probably would have done some investigating first. I have a feeling they are getting the part from a dealer. Some shops will only use oem parts.
Oh will. I will just be glad when he gets it back.-

Nice job! He said it goes into limp mode now when he try to drive. I told him don't drive it till he takes it in. I also told him to let it idle till it warms up when he does take it in.

Well the up side is my son texted 2 days ago and said the shop really knew their stuff, thats good. Texted yesterday and said they were about done with the car. the bill will be $750. Called later in the day to say they got it started and it ran better but they had trouble starting it so they found it needs a high pressure fuel pump. $1200 for the bump $500 to put it on.
About 2K all in. I am not amused
