Definitely go the RMW route. He will not steer you wrong.
Not sure where you live, but he comes out to different parts of the east coast every year.
I have the flash tool and it's a good piece to have. No, you can't do your own tuning, but that is usually a bad idea unless you really know what you are doing.
Good luck with the car!

I am actually in Orlando and was working on a tune party, I spoke with Jan about this and laid out plans, I was unable to get a date out of him to try and promote it with the local club, and put it all together (basically cause he did not want to do something in Dec).
So without going into the details I was not going to spend my time putting it all together, taking deposits, I already had the Dyno lined up and a discount agreed upon if we took the whole day and making plans for him if I could not get a date. So I scrubbed that mission . . . so you now see why I am a little worried about being locked into one tuner. -

I can understand his reluctance if he didn't feel comfortable with a particular time, but is there a club around that could take over the promotion/scheduling?

That's cool and I understand about the lack of date can be a PITA.
Remote tune is the way to go if you have a local dyno you can get on for a few data logging runs for Jan to tweak.
Good luck on your tune it will be worth the wait. -
N2MINI MINI of the Month
Not sure about this coming year but the past few years he has been at the MOTD and could put a "canned" tune as mentioned above on your ECU and probably without you having to buy the Tuning Tool. Granted you got what you got at that point no fine tuning with the tool down the road but that is how we all did it to start with.
-
Now See that is something I can get behind, never even thought to ask about that. I will order the Remote Programmer and see about having him put a 'canned tune on it. -
c0op3r, a lot more civil over here ( inside joke fellows). Jan tuned my Coupe and I couldn't be happier with the results. I agree with Dave, forget about the others and figure out a way to go RMW.
-
Yes I am starting to lean in that direction, and if I can get a canned tune on the programmer from the get go, its a done deal!
I personally feel that the programmer is just a way for them to lock the program to the VIN (which I understand for making money reasons) but hate :incazzato: that we have to pay 350$ for that, but I guess I will have to just deal with it. -
Oh here is my Dyno sheet from MM9, this is with NO TUNE, just the bolt ons, and remember an AutoTrans:

You made a good choice! Remember you can always contact Jan when it comes time to upgrade again.
-
Of Course the two next rounds of upgrades:
First: a Gauge Pod with: Innovative AFR, Innovative Boost, and Howerton Water/Meth Information Guage
Second: Howerton HFS-3 Water/Meth injection system for the Mini Cooper S
the first will help with tuning, and the second will require a new tune, I am going to go mild on the water so that I can have a margin of safety.
I am glad that I got the flash unit as now, I can flash the Water/Meth System out if I want to.
I am going to build the gauge pod on the A-Pillar Like this:

Congrats on the tune.
I have had a Howerton Meth kit for years and have been running 100% VP M-1 meth since day 1. It is 100% safe no need to mix with water.
Jan can put a tune on your car for 100% and you can take advantage of the higher octane along with the additional cooling that 100% meth provides.
METH does a motor good. -

Just don't put gauges on the A pillar because of the airbags. -
Been there, done that, with the A Pillar gauge cluster. Reduced my vision quite a bit so ended up selling off the custom built A Pillar.

Thats nice, I am only going to do three gauges, and keep them low as I am tall to try to reduce the the vision loss

Here's mine with a set of Double Cups.
Upper:
Lower: (which I prefer)
Or of course you always have the old school Dash Top option too.
