+1 on the battery. MINI's don't like old batteries and throw all kinds of electrical gremlins when they start to go bad. Also check the jump start stud in the little black box on the left side of the firewall under the bonnet. These have been known to come loose and/or corrode which causes problems similar to what you explained.

The new battery posts may be a smaller dia. than the old one and when the clamps are tight they are still loose on the post, ask me how I know....
