Yeah, thats the Mini-do-more hitch. IMO DO NOT use a cargo carrier on it.... Trailer receiver, bike rack, etc. would work fine, but the weight and leverage a cargo carrier puts on the hitch is nooo good.

You could get a rear fog light, or a brake light that fits in the receiver!

Thumbs up on the utility trailer idea, 1000's of miles towing with no Mini problems... you can also put LED's in the plastic "blank" that covers the hidey-hole as a rear "fog", but the OE fog is too deep....

you just need a 1 1/4" ball mount and whatever ball size the trailer tongue uses (usually 2")
most and UHaul stores sell lots of them. They could probably even set it all up for you. Home Depot also stocks some (usually the 2" ones though so its a 50/50 chance)
