Shelsey Walsh in Britain likes to claim it is the oldest continuously-used motorsport venue in the world (108 years), older than Indianapolis, Le Mans or Monza, though the Swiss might reasonably call it a 'gentle bump climb' compared to their real hill climbs. But it does get used by Minis: [ame=http://youtu.be/sOnZzVeBXS4]Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb Mini Cooper July 2012 - YouTube[/ame]
I believe that the Giant's Despair Hillclimb in Pa. is older, also it's a must see. The last time I went the top car was a Bobby Rahal Indy car with a turbo Buick in it putting out close to 900 hp.
Giants Despair Hillclimb was established in 1906. However it was not run from 1911 - 1915 and again was not from 1917 - 1950. 1972 was an off year. There was no event from 1981 - 1985 either. Shelsey Walsh was established in 1905. However, it was not run from 1914 - 1919 during WWI and again stopped from 1940 - 1946 during WWII The Brighton Speed Trials were also started in 1905 with gaps for wars, fuel crisis and poor road conditions.
Thanks Nathan I didn't know that but it's a great event to go to for the cars and all the crazies (remember the bog?).
I have done that Giant Disappointment in PA in my MINI and it was not that great. Take a run up the Dragon and you will see why I feel that way.
