Your skinny, lay on your back and have a look:lol:. It should be centered, straight up and down. But it could be full of crud, which may be why the wrench won't go in.

I'll take another look tomorrow with the car on the ramps.
But just straight up eh? You might be right---full of crud. :eek6: -

You might want to squirt a little liquid wrench up in those holes and let it soak overnight before you go at it with the allen key tomorrow.
Or Vodka, it might work, something I haven't tried.... but yeah, it might work -

Will do. Thanks!

When you get them off, and if they're not scratched, don't throw them away.
Send them to me. -
He he. I think I'm going to polish them and put them in my Mini "altar" in the basement.

There is a picture somewhere of a set made into pen holders. You could get creative with ideas.

I'm only a couple of months late posting this, but was thinking of changing out my tips as well. I would think most replacement tips would need to be spot welded on, but I'm sure many of them use a screw to secure them.

Sooo....
...did you ever get them removed? The holes on mine are on the bottom, about halfway in, and I used the multi-bit torx from Autozone to unscrew them. The screw is mounted at about a 45* angle, and then they just pull off. It's ugly as hell without the tips, and there's a little support bracket that keeps you from putting any other tips on (without cutting).
I've been having a hell of a time finding new tips or a shop that can put new tips on without charging me an arm and a leg for 'modifying' them. What has everyone else done about tips? -

OEM Sport tips for me.

I haven't actually tried again yet. Maybe tomorrow. :rolleyes5:
So, I'm not sure what you mean by a support bracket preventing other tips from being put on. I guess I'll see tomorrow if I get to it. -
After you take off the tips you'll see a small flat piece of metal welded to the top of the exhaust pipes about 5" in from the tips. Most aftermarket tips are longer than 4-5" so if you wanted to put new clamp style tips on, you'd have to cut this piece of metal off. I'm sure it just helps to prevent rattling and keep the tips looking straight and even.
I really like the tips on that millitek (?) exhaust kit that always pops up on the forums, but I'm not ready to spend a few hundred on exhaust quite yet. -

I've decided I'm not going to remove 'em after hearing the story behind their design history... Hell I'll probably put 'em on the JCW exhaust when I change it over some day... :beer

I see. Thanks. I was hoping to get something like this:
and engrave "One" and "Ball" on each tip (I have the one-ball mod). -
-
My next idea was to get a large tubing cutter and just cut them in half, drill a couple holes and shove some screws through it.
Now I'm debating returning the tips (though it may be past the deadline) and just having some tips customized at the muffler shop for like $70.
