The standard header I have on the car has a slightly smaller flange than the head exhaust ports which mush be bad for flow. Thanks for the info on the gasket.

If the standard header you mention is OEM, it does not have smaller flange ports than the stock head, Cooper or MCS.

The reason I took the head off! a burnt out exhaust valve and a big sert insert. I hope the 'S' head will take more abuse....

Burning the valve isnt going to be corrected with the r53 Head.. the reason the valve burned will still be an issue.

Installing the r53 head will replace the burnt valve and also the insert. The r53 heads are the same as r50, with the exception being the r53 Valves are of a different quality to take the BOOSTED pressures and heat. So that will be a plus!!

    Have fun..(LOL)

    Just saying.............................

The reason I got the S head was for the better exhaust valve....plus it was cheap!

Looks like the seed for the damage may have been a nick from the cutting tool.

Yes I think you are correct as the the first insert(fitted before me) blew out. Then I fitted the oversize insert seen in the photo making sure all the valves were shut. I thought the 3 cylinder running was the insert but once fixed I found the burnt exhaust valve. Then I read the S head had better exhaust valves so I opted for that head a 20,000 miler from the UK for $98 shipping was covered by one of my sponsors.
