I recently had a timing chain tensioner go bad. I replaced the the chain at the same time. its a kit that comes with everything. I know this was over kill but I am a little paranoid about timing chains. I could have done just the tensioner.
What part of the country do you live in. Maybe we can help find a good mini specialist.
If you want your mechanic to do it he will need a special tool. Here is a link for what you need. Agin you can do just the tensioner.

It comes with everything.
The sprockets for the cams and crank do not have any keys in them. The tool holds the cams and crank in place once you install the new chain and tensioner you torque the sprockets to speck and that holds new. It is very important to torque it the way Mini says to do it or the sprockets will slip and you will bend valves.
here is the tool he will need

The timing may be off now. I would take care of the tensioner problem first then see it that fixes the problem. It sounds like this is where it all started.
Lastly here is a youtube link that shows how to do it. I like this one because he torqued it wrong and had to redo it.

I know you probably have but double check all your vacuum lines. I had a vacuum line blow off my R58. it was sitting next to where it connects so I almost missed it.
I may have misunderstood, did the shop replace the timing chain tensioner?
One of our members should know of a good shop near by.-

It has two PVC valves. One on the passenger side going to the intake and the other on the divers side going to the turbo. Sounds like that would work just never heard of it being done that way.
Have you checked for carbon build up on the intake valves? Also does your mechanic have experience with Minis? -
My regular mechanic ( very honest ) doesn't know that much about mini's, so he brought someone in (don't know how much he knows). The valves were surprisingly clean.
A little history: This car is new to me (6 weeks), so unknown maintenance history. 56K original miles. I've replaced the coils and plugs, Oil, Oil filter and air filter. Last week I had the start of a timing chain knock and rough idle so I went on the web looking for a shop that specialized in mini's. One was advertised about 2 miles from my home. I wrote them, asked if they had the tools and training to do a timing chain replacement if necessary, they said yes so I dropped the car off.
Dropped the car off that evening, authorized an hour of diagnostics ($100/hr), thinking they would need that to measure the timing chain and get back to me.
Got call the next morning, I need a new tensioner and the cost will be over $600. When I asked why, I was told that they removed the valve cover to check the timing chain and guides...
At this point, I can see they are going to charge me for the valve cover gasket (they needed to order all the parts I needed from the dealership) anyway, so I give them the okay to replace the tensioner.
Stop by the next day and ask what the chain slack measurement was, only to be told they don't have the tool to measure chain slack, at which point they take me out to the car (valve cover removed) and demonstrate the weak tensioner by bending the chain with a large screw driver.
Next morning rough Idle, lean air/fuel code, yellow engine light.
That's when my trusted mechanic got involved, checked MAP, smoke test, vacuum line check then finally the check mentioned above showing no vacuum in the crank.
The bit they are questioning is the one in the valve cover. -
My future plans are: V-belt, thermostat, water pump and tube, all the hoses, and of course the timing chain. The MAF, MAP, VANOS and PCV are all on my watch list as well. That said, need to know how to diagnose this no vacuum / lean fuel / rough idle issue first.
Have already ordered most of the tools and parts.
