This guy seems to be stuck on the price range of say tag, movado, bulova, etc etc. Seems like he has a vendetta against those companies. I can see his point... as a watch guy myself, those watches tend to be way over priced for the materials/movements. And I don't buy a watch to look like everyone else. But to each his own. If you like the style of it and want to get better quality than say fossil, then doooo ittt. I avoid types of people like this by going vintage or boutique. I wear a vintage sieko, trying to find a WWII Benrus Sky Chief, and the boutique brand I admire is Sinn. It's the style I like more than the price b/c all of these watches I just named are in the price range he's talking about. I don't really think he's a conneseur b/c he just generalized a price point without discussing many other brands like Tudor which is Rolex's "entry level" if you will; they use the same parts and pieces and design. Or many boutique brands that use better materials and the same movements as some of these "high end" brands. But whatever... I'm off my soap box.
I've got some nice watches but none are in his "mid level" range. okay one is but I inherited it. I've seen some really great ones for $1-2k but I won't spend that. I only wear 2. My cheap Casio and an old Helbros self winder I restored.
I've been a "watch person" for a long time. I'm fortunate enough to have a few decent ones, but this guy is nothing but a blow hard snob. He's well within the realm of being a D-Bag. People like him give those of us who like nice watches a bad name.
I've been a mechanical watch guy for a long time. I have a watchmaker's tool kit and occasionally buy lots (as in a few at a time) of old mechanical watches in need of repair and try to repair them myself. My success rate is probably 30-40%, but the lots are cheap, so I have fun. I have ended up with a few, as that numpty in the video above described as 'mid level' watches, including an Alpina Avalanche automatic chrono, a Fortis Fleiger, and a few ETA watches. But remember what he said about ETA watches: THEY'RE FUKCING $4IT, FUKCING $4IT!!!!! THEY'RE $4IT!!!!!!!!. For you enthusiasts, here's a vid that WolfGTI linked to me recently. https://vimeo.com/120008627
Numpty. There's a piece of English slang that I don't hear too often on this side of the pond. Luv it.
One post just reminded me I had a Rolex years ago. Bought it in the ship's store for like 50 bucks or something ridiculous and had it briskly removed from my wrist by a very fast thief, broad daylight, on a street in Olongapo City.
I used to buy phoney Rolexes, we called them Rorexes, in Taiwan all the time and give them to friends and family. Quartz movement ones were $25, selfwinding movement $50. I gave one of the $50 Rorexes to my Dad, about the same time a friend of his got a real Rolex. His friend had to bring his watch in for repairs about three times in the first two year he had it, Dad's Rorex just kept ticking.
Coincidentally this article showed up on my Flipboard app today. Inside the Shop of the Last Great American Watchmaker
Well I'll be a monkey's uncle: I'd never heard of him--and right in my back yard. Thanks for the link, I'm going to seek him out some day.
