Surgery is over.... It was a text book procedure... Nathan had no issues.....

    EXCEPT

    He broke the Rib Spreader.....

He is now in recovery... And will be there for a little while.... At which point Saul will get to see Nathan...

    Further updates to follow...

I wonder if I should offer to weld / repair the Rib Spreader??

    That's all good news!!

Maybe you could add a couple of those ice cream scoop handles to the rib spreader. That would be a nice upgrade.

Great news. Glad to hear it all went well.

    Hang in there Nate!

My father had a pretty bad heart attack about 15 years ago and he recovered reasonably quickly. Just listen to what the docs tell you and you should be up and driving Gnat like a madman again in no time.

Nate should ask for the rib spreader as a souvenir...then make a rib rack out of it for the grill.

I had to be one of the gears/handles, no way the spreader itself cracked. Otherwise Nate's only fear is kryptonite.

Just talked to his brother Saul. They have already asked for the broken rib splitters and they are not to be had....darn I thought maybe Chuck could have used them with his walnut blaster! They expect to take the breathing tube out around 6:00 PM today. He will be in Room 4038 for you local guys. I'll take a picture later today and post it up.

Great news. I'll let him rest today and go see him tomorrow or Thursday. Which ever Saul says is better.

Probably a real expensive piece of equipment.... I'll bet it's going back to the manufacturer for inspection.... Would think it's a problem to have something like this break if you are in the middle of a procedure....

Refer the surgeon to BlimeyCabrio's blog page on how a 2X4 lifts a MINI for the next time he has to do a manifold swap on a MINI person.

Glad to hear most things worked out alright.

There is not much to a rib spreader to break, I wonder what happened?

I'll bet Metalman could make something much nicer, possibly with an ice cream scoop motif.

There are different types, but they all share that common theme. I have a hard time believing that it broke anyware but at the handle, gears or where the parts come together--if it broke anyware else, that's a problem...I used to use them, but haven't in quite awhile, they are industrial strength type items.

Those things look simple. They are simply. And they are through the roof expensive. Good thing Nate won't be charged for it. It is something to be proud of, breaking one of those puppies, good for Nate!

As soon as you're free of all the attachments, ready for a little nourishment, looking around at your new surrounding and wondering what's next, take that moment to be welcomed into the honorable and exalted realm of the zipper club. No dues except for exercising your pinball machine, no secret handshake and every time your cardiologist says he'll see you again in six months you can do a backflip because you know you've got at least that much longer.
