The DMV hooked up a code reader to your OBD port to read your vin? They wouldn't just go by the number on the windshield and other places on the car? Or were they checking to see if the ECU matches the VIN? Why the heck would they do that? Did you bring the car in from out of state? out of the country?

In Jersey they hook up for emissions which will also give them the vin.

same thing here in GA too I believe. Kinda makes going stand alone ECU a pain in the butt if you have a car built after 96.

It is going to be the future of SMOG checks. No more tail pipe testing. All the smog certification will be done via ECU port. So having a modified engine will be a challenge in the near future in most states.

One good reason to live here in the middle of nowhere (and probably the only one) where they don't have emmisions inspections, or even inspections for that matter!

When I moved here from Sandy Eggo I had to have the vin verified on my Jag, the HiPo officer wasn't happy with my replacement engine bay vin tag that I'd stamped myself, but finding the same number both on the windshield tag and stamped on the frame members allowed me thru. Since then all I have to do is renew online.........

Yeah, no inspections or emission checks here in the wilds of Western Washington either!

I feel very lucky there is no testing as of yet in Hooterville. In fact I moved one county north so it probably not going to happen up here for a long while.

Yea they won't use the VIN on the dash they need it off the computer. What a pain in the rear I was thinking of unhooking the battery for a soft boot? I am taking it to a shop on Friday have them boot it. I guess I am a first with this problem,I registered the car two years ago when I bought it no problem then. Thanks for input guys

The CA VIN showed I had a smog pump (which we don't) and I had 2 anomalies which the new classification only allows one. After getting it down to one the next challenge was the emissions. I failed the first run because of none readable comparative results. In other words I was to clean. LOL I run LPG 100% of the time now so it lowered my emission level below the factory allowances. To much clean air???? Easy enough I turn off the lpg drove around the block to clear any residue and passed with flying colors. In CA you can no longer get an emission exempt certificate unless the fuel used is on their approved list and that all the oem emissions devise are still functional. Stupid considering they are not needed with alternative clean burning fuels? -

I am outside of Philly and we have Emisions testing via OBD.
Check out the map of PA here to see what counties have emissions testing.
