I had a Porsche Cayman for a few years. I bought one with a PDK as there were very few with manual transmissions and I needed a car more urgently than the overseas ordering time would allow. I've gotta admit that the PDK was a spectacular transmission. In sport mode, it would rev match on hard braking. I had someone in the car in front of me spill their coffee one time (my best guess from what I saw through the rear glass) and slam on their brakes... I went from 55 MPH to 0 in just a few seconds (a full panic stop) and the damn car downshifted at least 3, possibly 4 gears, rev matching perfectly on each change (the sound was spectacular). When I was in practice, I could have done one downshift, but odds are that I just would have relied on the brakes alone in a panic stop. I'm 100% certain that the PDK was faster than the manual in 99.9% of the hands that might have been driving it. Perhaps a pro driver could have wrung out a fraction of a second w/ the manual on a good day, but that transmission was just spectacular.

Ok.......some observations and questions. I don't consider a DCT to be an automatic in the general sense. An automatic IMHO has a torque converter. If it has a clutch it's a manual regardless of how it shifts.
Does the DCT/PDK have the same number of gears as its manual counter-part? If not then the ratio's can't be compared.
Educate me.....
