The Countryman is an extension of the second generation line. Just like the coopster and roadster will be.

Here's how I see it..
1st gen = Tritec engine
2nd Gen = Prince Engine.

Here's the real deal...
it has nothing to do with if it's a first or a second of that flavor of car. It has to do with the base chassis and it's family derivitives.
The R50/52/53 all were derivitives of the first new MINI chassis. The R56-60 family are all somewhat derivitives of the second chassis.
It's like saying that the first boy of a family is second generation when it was the grandparents that had emmigrated.
So it's the first Countryman, but it's from the 2nd generation chassis. Hence it being a second gen car. Just like the case for the Clubman, where there was no 1st gen equivilent.
If that's not gonna do it for you, there's nothing to be done.
