Yep, thats the business end! So, I painted the back panel, and the floor of the air box. (To hide the ugliness that you would see behind and below it. ) Then I polished a lot of pieces of aluminum... And riveted the two panels together... Man this thing is going to look SWEET!
I would make them to sell, but the price would be quite high... Just material cost so far is in the $300 range. This is one complicated piece to make... Thanks a lot NACA duct in the hood... Finished (Not polished yet) part...
Sometimes it is nice to have a one-off piece to call your own. I always enjoy seeing your workmanship.
Thanks. I am going to need to change my lid design a little. There just isn't enough meat around the hole for the NACA to be durable. Now if I was doing a production style open back box without the NACA inlet, my original design would be perfect. And in other news... Now all I need is a fridge, and a TV, then I would never leave the garage in the summer!
Another small redesign is in order... Evidently it is too much to ask for K&N to give mounting hole specs with their filter dimensions! Do they think that nobody out there makes their own parts? Any who, the filter which should have fit my foam board prototype like a glove, just falls straight through the hole! So now, I need to go back and shrink the hole by 1/4" per side... Not a big deal, just slightly less filter area for air flow, but the added bonus of having more room for the hardware for the retaining plate... All in all its a good thing, so glad I haven't cut the 1/8" aluminum mounting plate or retainer yet!
Still making progress... Tomorrow will be all about the new pieces of the framework... The top rails need extensive modification, and all the rivet holes need drilled, then a good polishing... Sunday after I can get all my measurements (from the actual box) I will start making the filter plate... I got a chunk of 3/16 aluminum from work for FREE, so that is what the plate will be made from. (Overkill! 1/8 would do the job just fine.) I also snagged some 1/8" plate from the scrap bin for the retainer plate... Wont be able to do much with that until the rest is semi assembled for the sake of getting it right the first time. (I know, I am one to talk about getting things right on the first try!)
Wholly (choose your choice of four ****s) what a day! Minus the whole "cant use rivets yet" thing, the intake is really taking shape. All the exterior aluminum is done minus a few rivet holes. All but one Lexan panel is done, and even covered in "less than permanent fastening material" and the plastic covering on the Lexan... It looks GOOD!
Dang, Dick...I saw all that wood paneling, the dog, the bed, and the disassembled airbox, etc. and thought to myself, "OMG, he has gone and redone his garage"!!:yikes: Silly me....
