I execute the exact same steps on other forums and the word with the buried url turns blue and is underlined.
Do yours turn blue and get underlined here on MA?

That's the way it works here on M/A. We talked about that early on and this is what we ended up with. I personally prefer to see links stand out a bit more obviously so I usually add the underline myself when I link something.

There are a few things at work here.
The style was set from the get go that links would be blue but not underlined unless hovered over.
There is a also a bit of code behind the scenes that takes a URL and if there is a description of that URL the description shows instead of the http://... bit. It lends for a cleaner look when reading text.
So instead of seeing http://www.sitename.com/lotsofotherstufftahatcanbeconfusing you see Lots of other stuff that can be confusing as the link.
