Jag design boss reveals his plans for a more hardcore hardtop F-Type to spearhead an R revolution

Jaguar F-Type designer Ian Callum has raised the tempting possibility that the hot R version of the stunning new roadster could in fact be a coupe. Bit like how BMW's M division created the wild breadvan tintop variant of the Z3 M.

In fact, he's so bullish about the F-Type that he told PistonHeads it could spawn a sub-brand within Jaguar with all manner of variants.

He's pretty certain the coupe is a given. "There is definitely a business case to do a coupe, that decision will be made quite soon," he told us.

Then we got talking about a hot R version - might that be the coupe? "It could well be," he said. He wouldn't discuss engines, but the R version would have to borrow the 550hp engine from the XKR-S, given that the standard V8 S F-Type with 495hp already comes close to the XKR output. Probably wouldn't be far off in price either with standard V8 S costing Â£79,950.

Callum has big plans for the aluminium-bodied two seater. "Personally I think we'd be mad not to turn this car into something more. It's going to end up almost its own brand, the F-Type brand," he told us in an interview.

"We can work on having a portfolio [of models]. We'll do that," he said. Suggestion of a shooting brake results in him making a face, but he says "who knows?"

Interestingly the coupe concept seen at the Frankfurt show last year came after the convertible. "That was an F-Type with a fastback," he told us. "We'd already finished F-Type. I said to the design team, if we were to do a coupe, what would it look like, so we put a model together."

Engineers working on any R version would welcome a coupe shape, much like Z3 M lead engineer Burkhard Goschel wanted it for the BMW - the fixed roof makes it that much stiffer.

It may even allow Jaguar to remove some of the weight too, a good thing given that the entry V6 weighs almost 1,600kg. Whether that matters at all depends entirely on what it's like to drive. It SHOULD be brilliant. Fingers crossed.

Jaguar's new F-Type looks remarkably like its design study, though itâ€™s missing two things. First is a major feature of the C-X16 concept itâ€™s based on and the second is something found in any true sports car; an advanced hybrid drivetrain and a manual transmission.

To the surprise of many, Jaguarâ€™s new two-seater isnâ€™t available with a stick shift and thereâ€™s no immediate indication that it will be. Ian Hoban, Jaguar vehicle line director wonâ€™t divulge, but heâ€™s certainly not ruling it out. In fact, he couldnâ€™t be hinting more strongly.

When asked if a manual is on its way, Hoban responded by stretching out his arms and commenting that he has â€œa list this longâ€ of modification and upgrades he already wants to make of the car. But first, he says, those additions have to â€œfit the brand DNA and the F-Type DNA.â€ A manual transmission he says would only be integrated into the F-Type, â€œif it makes the car an extension of you.â€

Sports car drivers would argue that thatâ€™s exactly what it does and so a stick-shift F-Type now seems like a foregone conclusion.

With European sports car drivers more ready to adapt to automatics it is, somewhat ironically, America that has become the last bastion of support for rowing your own gears.

â€œI had this conversation with the brand guys months ago,â€ says Hoban, admitting that Americans really do see the manual transmission as a sign of being a true automotive enthusiast. BMW has suffered the mistake of not offering a manual in the M5 it he past, being forced to recant and deliver one.

Could Americaâ€™s love for the manual help bring a stick shift to the F-Type? â€œItâ€™s a big market in the U.S.,â€ Hoban admits.

And is a hybrid F-Type any more likely? Hoban counters again with a long answer to a short question. â€œThe concept was used for two things,â€ he says. â€œFirst it was used to showcase the design of the car. Second it was used to showcase technology.â€

On the design side, the production model is very close to the concept admits Hoban, though when asked if the technology will remain just as close all he will admit is that Jaguar is ready should the market so demand.

â€œWe do have that technologyâ€ he says. â€œWe have a rage of different alternatives, but the world hasnâ€™t made itâ€™s mind up yet.â€

â€œWe are ready to deploy them quickly when we decide what the right solution is,â€ says Hoban, admitting that itâ€™s actually their customers and not their executives tha will drive the decision.

Porsche 911 or Boxster: which IS the Jaguar F-Type up against? It's a discussion that's kept forums busy for months. As the best-selling sports car brand, Porsche clearly defines the sector, so others should fit around it. The F-Type doesn't.

Jaguar is unrepentant. The global sports car sector is so small, you don't need to build cars that directly rival one another. Indeed, do that and you're arguably on a hiding to nothing. Why build to another brand's price when doing your own thing is more genuine?

Who are they kidding. They're gunning for the 911, pure and simple. It's been benchmarked against the 911. The 911 continually comes up in conversation with Jaguar engineers. The 911 defines the Porsche brand and Jaguar wants the F-Type to do the same for it.

Power stats hint what it is. The range starts with 340hp; a 911 opens with 350hp. A Boxster starts at 275hp and topping out at 315hp. It ain't a Boxster. Was never going to be. Jaguar has designed it to be a 911, without the price tag, just like the original E-Type was a bargain alternative to the 911. Can't remember any tears about Jaguar not building a 356 rival then.

Given all this, does it stack up? We'll infuriate you for making a call withouthaving driven it, but first evidence (and the obvious proviso is that the truth IS in the driving) suggests so.

JAGUAR REVISITS JABBEKE (PistonHeads.com)

Classic cats commemorate the 60th anniversary of Jaguar's remarkable production car speed record

Jaguar has long been synonymous with high-speed motorway tests. Both the XK120 and E-Type were, legend has it, in part responsible for the introduction of new speed limits on Britainâ€™s motorways back in 1965. But perhaps Jaguarâ€™s most remarkable feat of speed on the road came in 1953, when they took the record for the top speed achieved by a production car back from Pegaso.

Jaguar had initially taken the production car speed honours back in 1949, when Ron â€˜Soapyâ€™ Sutton edged a factory-standard XK120 up to 132.6mph on a flying mile, on a closed road near Jabbeke, in Belgium. Successive attempts with Jaguar test driver Norman Dewis at the wheel raised that record bit by bit. But Jaguarâ€™s nose was soon to be bloodied. In 1953, Pegaso, seeing the chance to steal a march on one of the biggest names in racing, headed straight over to Jabbeke a few months later, and used a Z-102 to take the record at a speed of 155mph.

Not to be outdone, Sir William Lyons called Dewis up, and asked what he was going to do about it. Dewis was doubtful there was much more to be had from the XK, but he and his team headed back to Jabbeke in October. This time, the car was equipped with a streamlined bubble canopy and under-body shielding (which, conveniently, became available on the XK120â€™s options list just beforehand), as well as slick tyres with just 2mm of rubber left on them, blown up to 50psi. It was a real tale of derring-do, this. Dewis helmed the XK without a seat â€“ otherwise he wouldnâ€™t have fit beneath the tight canopy â€“ instead using a thin piece of foam as his only support. Above him, the canopy was bolted down, sealing him in â€“ had something gone badly wrong, the 120 would almost certainly have become his coffin.

Fortunately, it didnâ€™t. In fact, Dewis smashed the record with a top speed of 172.4mph, bringing the laurels back to Jaguar â€“ as its full-page advert in the next weekâ€™s Autocar Magazine attested. The XK120 was â€“ once again â€“ the fastest car in the world.

Today, the XK120â€™s spiritual successor, the F-Type, isnâ€™t the fastest car in the world. But that hasnâ€™t stopped Jaguar from returning to Jabbeke to relive its old glories. The plan? With the help of the local authorities, close a stretch of road and, quite simply, see what an F-Type V8S can do. Along for the ride â€“ though not taking part in the speed run, it has to be said â€“ is what Jaguar likes to refer to as the F-Typeâ€™s â€˜bloodlineâ€™: immaculate examples of an XK120, a C-Type, a D-Type, and an E-Type. Dewis is here, too, to cast the eye of experience over proceedings.

Itâ€™s a freezing day as we line up at the side of the road to spectate. Half the town has turned up, too, and the marshals are having the devilâ€™s own job making sure everyone stays far enough back to avoid being creamed by the F-Type. The car is completely standard, with the exception of a few strands of duct tape â€“ de rigeur, of course, for a high-speed run. Itâ€™s being driven by none other than Andy Wallace, one of Jaguarâ€™s 1988 Le Mans-winning drivers, and as we arrive the GPS data logging equipment is already being calibrated. The F-Type rockets past, seemingly already on a flyer â€“ but in fact, this is just Andy having some fun as the instruments are set up.

Eventually, though, the word is given. In the distance, a pair of twinkling Xenons start to move, and the helicopter Jaguarâ€™s hired to record overhead video tilts into the sky and peels off to give chase. As it approaches, the tyre roar increases, and then the F-Type flashes out from behind the hedge in the central reservation, whipping past in an instant, and itâ€™s gone. But the noise â€“ oh crikey, the noise is just fabulous. Letâ€™s leave the arguments about where the F-Type fits into todayâ€™s sports car market or whether itâ€™s going to be worth the money Jaguar will be asking, and just revel for a moment in what a superb exhaust note it has â€“ an guttural throb at low revs which rises to an angry ululation, overlaid with crackles and rasps on the over-run. You wonâ€™t need to buy one to enjoy this â€“ just stand outside a Jag dealer in a few monthsâ€™ time and wait for someone to take one out on a test drive. Take a Thermos and a fold-up chair, and make a day of it. Itâ€™ll be worth it â€“ itâ€™s that good.

After three more similarly scorching runs, Andy comes in and says he reckons thatâ€™s about the best he can do. It seems he started the last run with the rear wheels up on the roundabout island at the end of the straight, and then came to a halt, hard on the brakes, with the bumper just inches away from the crash buffers at the other end. Thatâ€™s all sheâ€™ll do on this stretch of tarmac, then â€“ so whatâ€™s the result?

179mph, is what. Itâ€™s still a smidge off Jaguarâ€™s claimed max of 186mph â€“ but then, Andy points out that the car was still accelerating when he threw out the anchor. Seems legit, in that case â€“ and on the way there, the car hit 62mph in 4.2 seconds, besting Jaguarâ€™s claimed time of 4.3.

So, the F-Type does what Jaguar says it does. Was that the point of this whole exercise? Erm... well, partly, say the men from JLR. But, as they put it, what they really wanted to do was to â€˜tell the storyâ€™ of the F-Typeâ€™s heritage. Or, in other words, to re-state their claim that the F-Type of today is just as special as the Jaguars of old. Is it? Well, we wouldn't like to say just yet. But weâ€™ll leave you with one significant detail. As the parade of crackling, wailing, popping classics rolled through Jabbeke before the event, followed by the the three burbling F-Types, just as many cameras were pointed at the new cars as were pointed at the old. In other words, if this car drives as well as it looks and sounds, itâ€™ll fit the brief.

My wife bought her '09 Jaguar XF when it was released in 2008. She's got 38,000 miles on it without any major problems (knock on wood). She loves the car, as she did her previous XJ8 and S-Type. We think the new F-Type is beautiful, but too expensive for our tastes.
