He's been in hiding so long that he probably forgot... But then again, Thumper never officially carried the ATI, just the FluiDamper.
Been there, done that. Got the souvenir ear plugs. Add working around flight-lines and missiles to the mix. I like a good sounding loud exhaust, but drone... not so much.
Hahaha. Alright alright everyone. Drone is terrible. I gotcha. And yes Dick, I'm excited for the all-nighter. Haha. I started ordering parts already, and I'm in talks with Jan about his crank damper. Also, I'm going to 15% while we're at it. So I'm dropping in a new tensioner, belt, idler pulley, crank damper, and 15% reduction pulley all at once. It's gonna be a loooong night.
yeah on our runs, I figure I can keep up with the car in front of me as long as they don't get lost I'll be ok !!!
Unless you need to pull off for an emergency fuel stop becuase you misjudged the distance like I did.
I have a straight pipe of sorts. Got the cat up front, then a straight pipe that splits into 2 Mustang center mufflers. It's loud but no drone. For the state test down there I pack fiber glass into the center mufflers.
Hey all. I was messing around on Ebay tonight, and came across electric exhaust cut-out controls. Here's what I'm thinking (And I DO NOT completely understand why a straight-pipe resonates in the R53, so bear with me). If I were to incorporate an electric exhaust cut-out in a straight pipe, would shutting the valve also stop the resonance? It seems to be a pipe length issue, so wouldn't opening and closing the valve essentially shorten/lengthen the pipe, thus cutting out resonance? So basically I could drive with it open all the time, then simply shut it off for highway cruising/when I don't want that added noise. Just let me know.
Like many things on eBay, that sounds good.... In theory. Yes, that's sort of the concept. The way you actually do that is have a GOOD ENGINEERED full exhaust (like OEM or JCW or Miltek) and an additional ENGINEERED shorter route that bypasses something (like half the mufflers, or a resonator). Then you're choosing a very specific muffling characteristic and resonant frequency on each path. This is sort of how the JCW active exhaust works on the new F56. It was a very expensive thing to engineer to get it "right". The way the Honda kids do it, they just hack their OEM exhaust and make it dump so it's loud. If that's what you want, it's your car. But it will sound like crap to most of the rest of us. Don't come back and ask our opinion on how it sounds... You won't like our answer.
Alright guys. Appreciate the answers. I know it has to be engineered one way or the other, but it seems like a valve can be messed with it at different intervals and "play" with the sound a little, maybe setting it right. Plus it'd be so very easy to move the restriction plate up or down the exhaust to keep changing the sound even more. Oh well. There went my hopes and dreams for an amazing exhaust. Hahaha
I may just build one and see how it goes, then sell it or only use it occasionally like Dave does. I've got a friend-of-a-friend who does custom exhausts, so I'm sure he could do it for me one the semi-cheap. Especially if I supply parts for the whole thing which should come in at well under $300, based off of what I'm seeing. Mind you, this is still a few months off, I'm just thinking out loud.
