Growing up in the 50's and 60's, in southern Virginia, I heard the same talk and feel right at home around it. I like to seek out those country stores you mentioned and have no trouble fitting right in. You are correct in your warning about it being a different world, but it is their world and I find it refreshing.

I'm south of the Mason-Dixion line myself, there are quite a few people who don't know the details and assume the North/South line has to do with the civil war.

 

It didn't when it was surveyed, but later it did become known as the dividing line, during the "war of northern aggression".
