Update time.... with some nerdy CAD stuff

I finished designing the airbox (OEM Location), just a simple approach in order to test the car with this setup (plus the charge pipe). Is the restriction the OEM airbox ? Does it need a re-tune ? We will see.
Some CAD photos for you !! Enjoy !!

    That's a sweet looking airbox.

Can the sides also be abs/poly carb? Less heatsoak.

This is just a test part, already it is overkill as I intend to use only on the dyno and for data logging. So investing more money is not an option, making all the big surfaces from steel it is faster and cheaper.
I am not so worried for the temps.... today we have 35 degrees Celcius !!!:Bag: So it will be hot no matter what !

That's the beauty of modding MINIs, everyone has their own vision of what makes for a fun ride.

I like the idea of being able to take a quick peek as to the state of your filter without having to take part of the box apart. Could imagine it getting quite messy from the inside though and making that plexi look less than clean... That would drive my OCD nuts!

    Keep up the great work!

And I love how your goal is.... If it's not more efficient and does not make more power.... There is no point.
Great materials and incredible design are to be noted... But I love how it won't become "a thing" unless it's more effective

Sometimes numbers aren't always the end goal.

It's about the power/tq curve and how it's delivered.

You could put LEDs inside the air box, just like unnecessary lit up CPU towers.

I don't know about the Mini but in a roots style super charger the inlet is always the first restriction.

In my Mustang world even models that come with superchargers from factory the popular upgrades are freer flowing intakes and massive throttle bodies and inlet upgrades.

The intakes themselves don't offer too much gains on their own but coupled with a bigger throttle body you get some nice notable gains.

Because the intake can free flow as much as you want but it's restricted by the entrance (throttle body) is able suck in.

The only aftermarket TB I saw was the Dinan which seems to be discontinued.

So I'd imagine a bigger TB, plus your new intake pipe plus your airbox would yield some nice gains, shift the power curve to the left and feel like it's gained more than the numbers show.

Again HP/TQ numbers are nice but the only way to really tell is at the track.

Again sorry to reference Mustangs again but I used to see if my 1/4 and trap speed would improve after certain mods.

Yeap totally agree. I was checking the other day APR's ultracharger kit for the 3.0 Audi engine. They accompany their charge pipe with a big throttle body plus an enlarged body. I think an E90 throttle body from a 320i BMW is a direct replacement to our MINIs, of-course I suspect you need some kind of calibration (I need to check that). OK so I have the charge pipe, the enlarge air box so... maybe I should find a second hand BMW throttle body and do some testing :D I feel like more CAD, 3d printed, testing, logging, dyno is coming :Pompus:

    P.S
Maybe altering the original r53 throttle body .... :Cyclops:
I need to go back to work ,
I will update you shortly :Ninja:

If you say Mustang agin you will be banned!! :D

My son has a Mustang GT I love that car. It's here at my house I am trying to straighten out some problems with it, ABS light, I need to put a new cross over pipe on it, and the seal in the rear end is leaking. Once I am finished with it he can have it back and I will take his Jeep.

Hello to everyone, sorry for the lack of updates. I did stop for a while updating the project and focus on some design details, logging, 3D printing quality and actual driving my car with the pipe on.

    So the story...:
A couple of months ago, someone from England (John) text me on Facebook asking details concerning the charge pipe.
Yadda yadda yadda [IMG] I end up sending for free a charge pipe in UK so John can do all the testing along side with 1320 MINI.
    Basic Spec:

    Material: carbon fiber reinforced nylon.

    Manufacturing Method: 3D Printing

Fitment: Plug and play, no cuts or modifications needed. All necessary hardware is included.

And this is exactly what I sent to England. (*By the way this is charge pipe version 5.)

    20200730_142902.jpg
Below you can see side by side photos of my charge pipe and the OEM Unit.
    20200730_150201.jpg

    20200730_150803.jpg

On 2/9/2020 John, went to 1320 MINI.

The vehicle was loaded on the dyno with the OEM charge pipe. Result 233.9 whp and 186.2wtq. OK so that's our base line. (I have to say John has a really really fast MINI)
Off the dyno and the installation of my charge pipe started.

    fit (8).jpg
    Charge pipe in !
    fit (4).jpg
And another side by side view.
    Pipe.jpg
And with that back on the dyno!!
    Dyno room.jpg
First three runs was with the same tune and only difference the TPE Precision charge pipe, resulting in 237.3 whp and 187.6 wtq.
    Below the dyno run. But....

    TPE Precision no tune.png

the 1320 MINI team saw that the AFR value was off (that's what I did not take into account into my own testing....) , thus more power was on
    the table.

After tuning, the car made 240.5 whp and 189.4 wtq!!!

    TPE Precision with tune.png

Of course numbers along are half the truth, as the car gained whp and wtq in the whole RPM range!! And yes you can feel the difference on the road!
Additionally to the above we saw reduction in IATs from 3 to 5 degrees and increased boost pressure of up to 1 psi.

I have a detailed blog post into my website (yeap i did that as well [IMG]) but I am not going to upload it here as I do not want to be considered an advertisement.

I spoke many times with the owner of the car and he is extremely happy with the results and the way the car feels. John drives his car everyday and does many trackdays every year so I respect his opinion a lot.

    What do you think?
Do you like it so far ? Comments and suggestions are more than welcome !
    Have a nice day,
    George .

You had a perfectly good 2002 R53, but oh no you just had let it go so you could get a Lotus that needed valve work. :D

    It's a 2006 Exige, with a TVS900 supercharger on it.
