Good question. I've never seen anything official about this.
Probably depends a ton on local conditions. It's not super dusty or icy where I live, and I've never done anything to mine, other than a few squirts of Teflon lube whenever I heard a squeak. 160k miles and my top still works like new. Others broke much earlier and I doubt maintenance was really a contributor. -
I give the exposed scissor joints a shot of dry lube if they start to squeak and that's about it. Oh yea, I hardly ever put the top up so it doesn't make all that much difference.
