well i don't have chickens yet but we do have Guinea Fowl. But the chickens are coming as I got talked into those also
No MM. Foggie is NOT getting a "Chicken" on her roof. This is actually the first project I have built with "No Nails". I am using "decking screws", which seems to be the new trend in small to medium construction projects these days. It sure makes things easy. I decided to relocate one of the 2X4's and all I had to do was back the screws out, move the board and screw it back on. Sure beats the old "nail puller" method. The coolest part was, I told my wife I needed a 20v, cordless, DeWalt hammer drill, with three gears and 15 torque setting for this project and she did not balk once at the $300.00 price tag. This baby is really sweet.
Reminds me of the Parrot and Chicken Joke... --- A man received a parrot for his birthday. The parrot was fully grown, with a bad attitude and worse vocabulary. Every other word was an expletive. Those that weren't expletives were, to say the least, rude. The man tried hard to change the bird's attitude and was constantly saying polite words, playing soft music, anything he could think of to try and set a good example. Nothing worked. He yelled at the bird and the bird yelled back. He shook the bird and the bird just got more angry and more rude. Finally, in a moment of desperation, the man put the parrot in the freezer. For a few moments he heard the bird squawk and kick and scream. Then suddenly there was quiet. Not a sound for half a minute. The man was frightened that he might have hurt the bird and quickly opened the freezer door. The parrot calmly stepped out onto the man's extended arm and said, "I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I will endeavor at once to correct my behavior. I really am truly sorry and beg your forgiveness." The man was astonished at the bird's change in attitude and was about to ask what had made such a dramatic change when the parrot continued, "May I ask what the chicken did?"
Actually, I guess I am. Maybe I should put a MINI Wing sticker in the lower left corner and sign it. Good one Nathan. Jim
How do you like working with the pre-cast concrete floating footers? I've considered building a small deck with those, but have wondered about stability.
They seem to work well. Normally I use the "pole building" method. Sink the 4X4 (or what have you) in the ground, level the base board and go from there, cutting the tops off, so all are square. This is the first time I have tried this method and they seem solid. Jim
Stability isn't usually a problem, but they don't tend to stay level in the long term unless you place them on rock/gravel or a concrete pad. The ground tends to move around to much for them to stay in place.
I said I was building light, but alas I did not. That coop isn't moving anywhere, ground movement or otherwise. Jim
I was referring to the deck question. Decks tend to be walked on and you can feel the bounce if anything underneath has shifted.
No that doesn't look light to me, now if you had used those treated landscape timbers which are basically pine logs with two flats as poles. That would be light and serve the purpose. I have a plan in my head to put up a small storage shed with them.
Now we be looking more like a "Hen House". Jim BTW: I'm only posting these, because MM ask for regular updates. I'll be glad to stop if there is no real interest.
