The 17,000 mile 2004 British Racing Green R53 JCW 6-Speed sold for $23,000. Bidding was very active for the last hour of the auction.
That's a nice price for an R53 JCW. I'm now hopeful that I'd actually get all of the $ out of Rufus that I've poured into him in the past 4-5 years.
Have you enjoyed your car in the last 4-5 years? If so, then the money was well spent. Whatever you would sell your car for, could you get another with the same options for the same price today?
For a car that I love like the MINI, it's not always a financial decision. I didn't buy the R53 as an appliance or as an investment (which is your point, I think). I thought "fuck the expense (within reason), I can afford it and it's a thing that I enjoy owning." I IS nice to know, however, that the finances aren't completely unjustified.
My first car was a 1959 Morris Mini Minor 850...I had it in the early 60s. After that, it was on to college and the 1966 VW Bug, and then without any foreign car until I retired from teaching. I always knew I wanted another Mini, but never dreamed it would take so long. My early '03 R50 was the first of the 3 MINIs I currently own [the other two are 2006 R53s. The R50 is very slightly modded, but so puny that, after attending MOTD in 2005, I bought my second MINI, the Royal Grey R53 and modded it for Dragon running as well as BMWCCA stuff. This is my daily driver and former MOTD and track car. It has 162,000miles on it and I NEVER bought it as an investment...just for a fun-to-drive car. The third R53 is for my wife and is totally unmodded. Like you, I enjoy owning my Gen 1 MINIs and know that, "the finances are not completely unjustified". By the way, "fuck the expense" briefly came into mind when it was time to replace the CVT in my R50 25,000 miles ago...just a brief hiccough, though...right before it went into its "surgery".

The 61,000 mile 2006 GP 0753 sold for $28,000. I’m a little surprised that it brought in that much but kudos to the seller for the detailing and having a very capable photographer.
