No winners here.... DEERFIELD - The driver of Mini Cooper that struck a moose Sunday night on I-91 escaped injury despite the car rolling three times after the collision, police said. The moose was not as fortunate. It was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. State police on Monday released more information on the collision between the subcompact car and the moose. It was reported at 7:30 p.m. in the Northbound lane of I-91 in Deerfield. Troopers from the Deerfield and Northampton barracks responded for a reported roll-over crash, said trooper Dustin Finch of the state police Media Relations Office. Upon arrival, they found a dead moose and a destroyed Mini Cooper, but the driver of the car, a 26-year-old man from Lakewood, California, was uninjured, he said. An investigation determined that after impact, the car rolled over three times. "Seat belts save lives," Finch said. Amy Mahler, spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Environmental Police, said the moose was a male and weighed about 800 pounds. FWIW I see the uninjured driver as a clear winner here. Tough and smartly engineered cars (and some good fortune tossed in as well).
Yup..moose are pretty dumb...their vision sucks too... They will actually charge a car or truck running at highway speed if you honk your horn...they consider it to be another male in their mating territory, so the honk is a challenge.....they then drop their head and run like hell in the direction of the honk (decent hearing)....ready to headbutt to keep their ladies (cows) theirs... And more folks are killed by moose than bears in Alaska every year... Typically a person, aka a tourist, will see one...want to say hi to the pretty moose...moose gets scared/mad, and stomps/kicks the person, killing them....Or folks think they will move...hits the moose with the car at high speed....breaks their legs, by having the hood GO UNDER THE BODY.....roof gets torn off the car as the body strikes it...everybody looses their heads.... That having been said, the area I lived in Kenai AK had a juvenile "negiborhood" moose that woke me one night rubbing his nose on my window screen to itch it.....like some, this one had come to terms living near folks since winters were less harsh, and a young bull could not get any real territory in more wild areas....
Note to self, no honking at Moose. MINI wave is OK, since they can't see it. Guess there is a reason for these signs.....
Yikes........reminded me of this vid I saw a bit ago. Warning........rather graphic [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3qo1de-iYk"]Deer Gets Hit By Porsche On Race Track - YouTube[/ame]
