Anyone that says MINI would go out of business if they just kept making the first gen is just silly. Actually it's really stupid.
How do you think they made all the money from the beginning? They took the automotive world by storm buy doing something different and creative and retro cool.
Remember when you could only buy a MINI at a stuck up BMW dealership because they did not there own separate dealership. They were the lower brand and costed less. The car was not over done and that is what made the car special and different with a soul.
Next BMW greed and design stepped in when it was not needed and poof you have the F'ed. 56. Hope you are happy.

Been lurching on this one for awhile and I'd have to say, how would BMW/MINI go out of business if it kept selling the very dependable R53 platform? The last 4 years of the R53 were rock solid vehicles! Change to the turbo and all it's related problems, that really helps the brand stay alive!

N2MINI MINI of the Month
That is exactly why they came out with all the other models, but could have if they wanted too, left the R53 alone.. It could have been their "special" "limited edition", or whatever they wanted to call it. In hopes of creating a new classic.
As we all know we the enthusists are the minority in MINI car buying. Way more people buying MINIs that it is just a cute DD car. No more no less. Maybe 10 percent of those do cosmetic mods, ( wheels, stickers ) less then half of those will do performance mods, ( cat back, CAI pulley, tune, etc ) Kinda like posters on here. Maybe 10% of the members access the site regular, and only 10% of those actually post regular. Look in this thread. It's mainly the same people you see in all the other threads!!!-

B.A.D. Ok some good points. But it doesn't bother me that they have different models. I would love to have a Clubvan, I don't know why I just like it. They are changing the brand based on surveys. Those same surveys say that after someone has the car for a few mounts they like it. So at first you can't find the window switch and it's annoying. Then you get use to it and start to like it because that's MINI.

Yes I also purchased a Countryman, but a justa as I didn't want to deal with the turbo and all it's issues. Will I every but another new MINI, perhaps not if they all will come with turbo. Now a turbo diesel, let's have!-

Then drive a R56 JCW.
That is the difference between "soul" and "no soul." If you can't tell the difference, I can't help you. It's not as dramatic between the R53 and R56, but it's definitely, positively, noticeably there. It's like Nate's video.-

You guys are so full of crap your eyes are all brown! :biggrin5:
I can tell the difference between a Lotus and my MINI, I used to own a Lotus 7, a real one - the most connected visceral car ever made. So what? It was terrible to drive almost anywhere BUT the racetrack too.....and lord help you if you went over 80 mph - there's a reason the British call the front fenders "wings"!
But none of that means a thing, because you're comparing apples to oranges.
"it's quite a bit slower than my car, but it growls, spits, and howls, the steering is heavier than pre-subway Jared eating a box of raisinettes; it sounds and feels like a race car."
This is what you think gives a car soul - making it a PITA in daily driving?
Hell, even NASCAR and Daytona prototypes have power steering these days - and I don't hear those guys complaining that their cars have lost their "soul"
And R53's have DCS and ABS too fer chrisakes!
Driving Nannies do affect the way you drive you car - on a racetrack - but in normal everyday driving they have little to no impact and effect, because I don't drive my car like an idiot on the street, so I have no need for intercession from my ABS or DSC. and hill holder is a bad thing? Really? Give me a break.
And saying I don't get what you're driving at is the worst form of elitism and snobbery. Sounds to me like you're rationalizing "the good old days", which in retrospect are rarely found to be good - just old, like your cars and your attitudes.
YOU aren't better than me or anyone else who chooses not to drive an 8 year old car. Get over yourselves.
and don't forget, I owned a 2003 JCW, so I have been there and done that, just like you. Yes there were things about my '03 that I liked better than my '09, and the opposite is true too. But to me they're cars, not reincarnated dieties.-

Ok we beat the horse to death. But I have to say we did good almost 15 pages and it didn't get out of hand. This is the fun and friendly Mini site.

There is room in the world for both points of view just as there's room for both types of MINI, you have the right to yours, and I certainly have as much right to mine, right?
and Dave O, really? that's all you've got? when presented with facts instead of innuendo, you skulk off into your corner, stick your thumb in your mouth, grab your blankie and sulk?
