I installed an Oil Catch Can on my MINI when it had less than a thousand miles on it. I empty a little bit of oily water out of it every couple of weeks. I haven't had a carbon build up problem, but it has less than 25000 miles on it, so as Minidave said, the jury is still out on that.

Gurtrude, I had the same thing happen on my 07 MCS....but burned a valve as well! As everyone has mentioned the catch can is up in the air, but a lot of us do it. You can build your own carbon blaster for about 75$ and a few hours later for the next time. My incident occurred at about 60K. Take care!
