Christmas 2010 is not even here and already I am having "visions of sugar plums" or perhaps "visions of my coupe" for 2011.

I see a whole bunch of R56 performance parts being transferred in your future.

It will also be one of the last MINIs to have an all four cylinder engine line-up meaning it will likely be MINI’s most performance focused product in the years ahead.
What does this mean? -
2013 Models are slated to have a 1.5 liter 3 cylinder engine.
-
Sadly one would also assume from this that the high performance 3 cylinders that BMW (240hp and up) has been developing will be way down the road at best for the Mini coupe.
Probably to be found in the BMWs built on the Mini platform much sooner.... another
Wonder how hard it would be to transplant one of the RMW stroked motors with all the goodies in the coupe......

Hopefully BMW / MINI can see the benefit of cross-pollination with this HP 3 cylinder, equaling increased sales opportunity at both marques.
Hmmmm......
I wonder how hard it would be for them to develop a Tri-scroll turbo for the HP 3?
Yeah baby....

I just can't get past the top.........it's ridiculous looking - like a toupe'...
I like the looks of the Roadster tho.... -
I like the whole look of the coupe including the top. It will be interesting if they DO change the front and rear appearance from the concept...I'm just concerned that if they do it will begin to look like a Crossfire :skep:

This would probably be the only car that would keep me from just keeping the Mini I have now. We'll see. It also depends on the price point and how I feel when I see/drive the actual thing.
-
You can put money on the fact that they will never let Mini build one that will have higher performance numbers than the BMW version .... Could be just a matter of the price point and that a Roundel equipped car can demand more money.... Still sad as I've dreamed ever sense seeing the coupe of a 2 liter all wheel drive Mini....

Only 3..... Yikes!!!
I'm having a hard time with that one. High performance 3 Cly is an oxymoron.
Back in the day SAAB advertised their 3 Cly 2 strokes as 3=6 having the power of a 6
ut:. Their ration-el was it had twice as many power strokes as a 4 stroke. If you've ever driven one of them you'd soon realize their reasoning was somewhat flawed. I owned one & while fun it was so slow it left a snail trail behind it.
Edit... I realize the 3 pot MINI lump will be 10 light years more advance than the old SAAB 3=6 lump. -
I'm with you on this one. That top just doesn't get it for me. Glad the Roadster is second out, because by the time it is, I might be ready for one. Reminds me of a TR-4.

Got to agree with you there, would much prefer an advanced 4 but sense BMW is talking about the HP 3 cylinders going in the Z4s and such, I'm banking on them being a pretty good piece. Haven't seen BMW lay to many total turds in the past so maybe it will be good.....and lighter too!

How much would say 50 pounds out of the motor package and the front of the car be worth to you? -
Go out and ride any sporty three-cylinder motorcycle - a high-performance three is a much nicer engine than a high-performance four.
I reckon the truly lovely engine layouts are V-twin, straight-three, straight-six, V-eight.
Sure, a three will be lumpier than a four, but it is such a lovely 'thrum', where a four is just vibrating. -

V-twins work best as air compressors.

Honestly, I hate to say this, but it looks like an under powered Porsche. I'm hoping that it'll grow on me - the Countryman did.
And the quick design turn around seems like a lot of potential nightmare problems. I have friends with the early R56s that spent more time at the dealer then they did on the road the first year. One just had a full engine rebuild. :frown2:
Just sayin' -
Man, that lil thing is pure sex!
