Wait for it....wait for it....
How long till the "best Ward's engine" award arrives?
Wrong and snippy...
VW has used "add blue" (just a name brand, like Mobil)aka DEF for several years....ALL 2015 cars (with the ea288) and all the Passats for SEVERAL years (think 2010?!)with the gen2 ea-188 had it...
And yes, BMW is having certificaion issues on the 2017 diesel cars.....add blue or not...BMW says due to the US EPA looking more closely....hmmm..
I really wish Motoring file would do some fact checking and get an editor....
The style of writing they do now, just stating things they THINK are right in an editorial way is pure BS.

Now why would they want facts to get in the way of a good story?

Read the quote...it say VW did not use add-blue, and implied or directly infered that's the emissions issue....they have used it since 2010 in the Passat and other gen2 ea188 diesel motors...and 2015 in all ea288 motors, all if which are part of the VW buyback/recall.
Yeah the turbo info is interesting.... -

Interesting that they moved the turbo around to the back of the engine, reversing the cross flow direction......

The Jetta of this era did NOT use DEF.
Both did switch to the newer ea288 motor for 2015..and the tank was moved to the rear right bumber area, filled from the trunk sidewall.
They are a part of thebuyback. -
The newer 2015 motors should be able to be compliant, but even the def using Passats from the 2010/12-2014 will only get to stay on the road with a partial fix and pollution credits and offsets....they will still produce about 2x the legal limit AT BEST (the most credible estimates) .
ALL VW TDI cars from 2009-2015 are non compliant and on the buy-back list. Even the larger ones, aka the Passat that used DEF, AND THE 2015 cars. -
Sorry about making this the tdi info thread folks...
New motors sound interesting...the turbo placement makes me wonder...can the turbo survive the heat being that close to the manifold, heck even being part of it. If the heat from the catalytic converter is an issue...wonder hat the manifold heat does to it?!
Other thought....sounds like the turbo is now pretty non-standard....wonder if that is to try to limit modding and to drive replacement $$ back to BMW/MINI as opposed to 3rd party turbo rebuilds . -

I didn't see any mention of a variable vane turbo being used...
Sure looks like it is in the picture...
