Does it have to fail to get it replaced?

Not sure, but I'd say yes it has to die. Can you image the cost to BMW/MINI if every car got a new pump?

Phooey. Mine will die at 151,000. I've got 137k now.

This extension is a joke if you ask me. Mini knows that the power steering pump and fan has really never been a issue. If they wanted to make themselves look good, how about warranting the trim pieces on the convertibles that cracks every two years, they never will because they know they would be paying out big bucks! Or how about warranting the crappy CVT trannys that they know are junk! Or how about the timing chain issues with the Peugeot motor? There never has been an issue with the power steering pump and they know it. JMHO

Is the warranty extended on the build date or date of purchase?
-
Steve AdministratorStaff Member Articles ModeratorProduction date.

Thanks Steve.

The warranty clock does not start till the car is delivered. The extension is from the in service date, not the production date.

Hmm......I'm not saying some PS pumps have not gone bad....but.....for instance, Steve at CMS said he has replaced maybe 6-7 in 7 years of business, compared to have at least double that in bad CVT's to come in.....you tell me where Mini should be helping out their customers? Few hundred dollar PS pump...or $8000. junk CVT

Steve AdministratorStaff Member Articles ModeratorOf course it is.

I had previous discussion in mind and misread the question as asking about the date the warranty extension is based upon. That is, the date determining whether a MINI is covered rather than the date a MINI's extended warranty begins.
Sorry to mislead. -
Been there, done that... But a MINI is drivable with NO Power Steering as I proved by driving the dragon and hell bender on the way to Fontana in 2012.

But they have only extended the warranty of the production range listed above up to 02/05 production. Feb 05
My 2005 prod 05/05 is not covered by the warranty extension.
3 months after the production range so maybe I have the improved pump. -
That stinks, but power steering is over rated... You'll get use to the racks feedback after a while!

Have you fixed your power steering stan?
-
Ok, so its based on the service date. Does, that mean when you first bring the car in for service at a Mini dealer? Or when you purchase the car?
-
The term is "In Service Date" and it is defined as:
The date the Vehicle was purchased by the original owner and driven or the date the Vehicle was placed in use for rental, demonstration or other purposes.
For the vast majority of us that would be the date you signed the papers and drove it off the lot. (assuming new purchase)
If purchased as a pre-owned you can always call MINI, 866-ASK-MINI, to obtain the In Service Date.
For Example, my 2006 has a build date of 10/06, yet I did not purchase until 1/8/07. My in service date would be 1/8/07 then. -

Hope your reimbursement comes though smoothly. I sure wouldn't have wanted to drive across the dragon with non operational power steering. You did well to make it to Fontana.

Thanks!
It was an interesting indoctrination, that's for sure ;-)
