Alrighty then, DHL just delivered and it looks like everything's here at last. Hard to believe this huge pile of stuff is all going back into my tiny little car!
Digging the pink salmon clutch. I've heard the walleye pike clutches are carp. Glad the last of your parts order landed at your house.
I noticed that too Scott. Do you figure he is pirating parts for use on Buzz? Buzz with 3 big honking SU carbs. :arf:
I've been spending so much time working on Buzz the poor E-Type has been neglected and the battery was low, so I put the charger on it....it's feeling much better now. Tomorrow I have errands to run (dogs to the groomer, new reg and a bath for the wife's Audi) so I want to get it out of the garage and on the road a bit. Oh, and my E only has TWO big honkin carbs - it's a '69. Originally it had two Strombergs, now has two SU's.
The Strombergs actually work fine, but the rebuild kits were getting really expensive and a little hard to find, especially the hot temp valves and idle diaphragms and such.....the engine seems much smoother on the SU's and I know everything about how to work on them.... Today I started working on the insulation that will fit against the firewall, had to cut a number of holes and slits in all the right places, I only really missed the mark on one, and it will be hidden by the wiper motor. I already like the look, tho I still have some fitting and some more cuts to make to route everything where it needs to go.... I doubt it will make the tiniest bit of difference to the noise level, but it hides the firewall nicely and cleans up the look - plus my 62 Cooper S had it, so I wanted it on Buzz. Like this one does....
I didn't get a lot done on Buzz today, my morning started back at school with a few end of semester wrap up meetings and some paperwork, then I headed out to my 'south 40' (it's really only about 3 acres out in the country) to mow the ass high grass which took twice as long as normal. When it gets that tall it gets sorta "stalky", and sometimes I have to mow over it two or even three times from different directions to get it all cut, and of course it was really thick, so I had to mow over the clippings so they wouldn't kill the grass under them. Took all morning and most of the afternoon too.... I did get a little more sanding done in the engine compartment, and I replaced the rusted out headlight panel. I so want to get this part of the project done so I can start putting things back into the car instead of taking them off....paint and body work has never been my strong suit. Obligatory pics....
You are getting there. A few more steps forward. Won't be long & you'll be out there breaking in that new little A series lump.
At some point in time you just have to say "that's good enough" and shoot some paint on it.......primer first. Tomorrow I'll sand it out with some 600, and hopefully get the color on it.
Ha! Sure, just write me a check......a BIG check.......:biggrin5: Well, another day working on Buzz, another setback. Today I was assembling the suspension to the front subframe. I took one of the upper control arms apart so I could clean and repack the needle bearings and they just fell out - no, they're not supposed to do that......they're also not supposed to be broken and rusty like some of these are either..... The shaft was completely knackered too....as expected once I saw the bearings. So, more parts to be ordered in the am. Too bad too, as it was really coming together today. I guess I'll move on to the transmission while I wait for parts - they won't be here till Friday or Sat if I'm lucky, next week if I'm not.
Made a little more progress today..... Got the rear springs and hi-lo's installed, now that I know which ones go where....I sent an email off last night to the place in England that supplied them to me and I had a response in my inbox this AM when I got up explaining how to tell which goes where. Would have been nice if they included that info in the box, but live and learn. My supposition proved correct, and they went in fairly painlessly. I don't have them set yet, that will wait till I have the car on the alignment rack but I'm definitely going to raise it up a bit. .....while it may look cool dragging the ground, when you only have about 3" of suspension travel to begin with, taking most of that away really makes the ride harsh. I also got the new final drive gear installed onto the diff carrier, but the pinion gear will require a bit of modification of the bearing support before I can install it. The new pinion is quite a bit bigger in diameter, so you have to relieve the housing a little to make room for it. Not a big deal, a little time with a die grinder will take care of it. Once that's done I can finish assembling the whole transmission and there'll be another thing off my list. Still many, many things to go tho....
