Depends on what they consider a safety problem. My only major problem was the well known "death rattle" from the timing chain on the N14. It was never a recall, but more a technical bulletin that the individual dealer could replace at their discretion. I got lucky and my dealer sprung for the entire cassette replacement and provided a loaner car. Others were not so lucky. I guess it's not a safety problem if your engine seizes up.
I did find out one thing though. If my HPFP fails I'm outa luck since the extended warranty ran out 9K miles ago. -

15V660 scheduled for one of my two 2005 cars, the TD96271. Apparently the red one, TL11596 was built late enough not to be affected by this problem.
