Luis Monzon: It gives me great satisfaction to have been able to win this title, and to repeat this success at my age is a dream.

The MINI World Rally Car has won its first ever championship title, with Luis Monzon clinching the Spanish Tarmac Rally Championship title at the weekend.

Monzon was unable to compete in the latest event, Rallye Villa de Llanes, but having won five of the previous six events in his MINI WRC - with a 31mm restrictor - and with only two more events to come, his nearest rival cannot secure enough points to take the title race to the next round.

The title is the second of Monzon's career, having last won the Spanish championship 12 years ago in 2001.

â€œIt gives me great satisfaction to have been able to win this title, and to repeat this success at my age is a dream,â€ he said. â€œThis unforgettable season is the icing on my career. This title is for everyone who has contributed. It would not be fair to highlight someone above the rest, but I have to thank the whole team, to Pedro Burgo and his team, technical engineering support from Prodrive and Nick Navas, JosÃ© Carlos DÃ©niz, to all the sponsors, my family and, of course, MINI and Manuel Terroba for believing in our bid to regain the Spanish Tarmac Rally Championship."

Vaclav Pech meanwhile could win the Czech National Championship this weekend, with first place in his MINI RRC guaranteeing the title.

Maiden title for the MINI WRC

Luis MonzÃ³n won the Spanish Tarmac Rally Championship to present the MINI WRC with its first title without even lining up at the Rallye Villa de Llanes last weekend. But five wins in six rounds were sufficient to win the title.

Luis MonzÃ³n claimed the first title for the MINI John Cooper Works WRC in the Spanish Tarmac Rally Championship. And the experienced 46-year-old did so without even lining up at the Rallye Villa de Llanes. Five wins in six rounds proved sufficient for MonzÃ³n to secure the title with two events remaining. The Spaniard now has two overall victories to his name, having also won the championship in 2001.

â€œI am delighted with this title,â€ said MonzÃ³n. â€œTo have pulled it off again at my age is a dream. It has been an unforgettable season and the icing on the cake as far as my career is concerned. I would like to thank everyone in my team for doing such a great job.â€

Instant success with the MINI WRC.

MonzÃ³n lined up in the MINI John Cooper Works S2000 at the opening rally of the year, the Rallye Islas Canarias El Corte InglÃ©s, before switching to the more powerful WRC version from the Rallye Santander Canabria onwards. And it was a successful move. He won at the first attempt in the MINI WRC and then added a further four victories, leaving the opposition trailing in his wake in the championship: Alberto Meira (Mitsubishi) is just short of 100 points behind MonzÃ³n in second place.

The final two rounds of the Spanish Rally Championship â€“ the Rally Sierra Morena and the Rally Comunidad de Madrid â€“ take place on 18th/19th October and 22nd/23rd November.
