Webb Motorsports Mule is now in the hands of it's third owner. I just purchased it in December from ebay and went down to Pheonix and picked it up. I was getting ready to strip my daily driver 03 MCS that I had been using for track days when this car came up on ebay. For a little more than I can sell mine for I got a race ready car on a trailer with lots of stuff I would never be able to afford. Very cool! Good luck with it, and keep us posted. Wonder how many years it'll be until mine looks like that... - Marc
congrats: I know the car well. I wonder if Randy Webb is rolling in his grave, seeing all those Mania stickers on his baby. One thing you might consider is going with the correct factory Trans fluid. Those boxes can be finicky with the wrong oil. Good luck
Randy has been very helpful and responsive to emails. Mini Mania is a new sponsor and unfortunatly not enough space to leave Webb Motorsports logo on the car. The list above is as the car came from Randy when he sold it to the previous owner. The car has been updated some to meet the requirements of the (USTCC) United States Touring Car Championships rules. Eric are you refering to the Redline oil? I havent heard anything bad about useing redline. And sorry your decals were taken off also. Let me know if you want to get them back on. I had to make room for the Miniusa.com decals.. vince
Congrats again on scoring Randy's old Mule! For what it's worth, I run AMSoil 5W-30 syncromesh MTF and it's helped me be able to shift noticeably quicker on track with no more "beating the syncros" grinding. Since it's so much lighter I can't vouch that it'll make the gears last a billion miles, but if your car is a track car then you don't plan on it lasting that long anyway!
The wrong trans oil can cause syncrho chunking during hard shifting. I have had a couple of cars through the shop where we had to flush the trans (several expensive times) of aftermarket oil. I honestly can't remember if the Redline was the offending lube. I do remember that early on, JLM (one of the original MINI hot-rodders) used Red Line in his trans when we installed the quaife. I think that his trans was fine, so maybe you are good with Red Line in your box. He eventually sold the car to the RSR motorsports so it's now in their stable.
I have opinions based on anecdotal evidence to share. From my Internet research, conversations with a couple lube manufacturers, and Terry Dyson, plus a few lube “cocktail” experiences, there appears to be a difference between slick shifting and protection as an outcome for gearbox lubrication types. Slick shifting does not necessarily mean it’s a healthy lube for our synchros or gear teeth. For protection it’s all about the additive package, plus a Torsen type differential like the Quaife adds an extra shear factor in the mix. For a Quaife equipped MINI gearbox using RL MTL, I would mix half RL MT 90 or Sylkolene SYN 5 with it. Straight MTF 94 has had great analysis reports on my Quaife equipped gearbox in the past over short fluid change intervals. I’m currently mixing MTF 94 with SYN 5 and it has quieted gear noise a bit and firmed up shift action. If you have a Quaife, change lube at less than 25k intervals, if using a non-OEM transmission lube, change at short intervals, if using MTF 94 without an ATB diff or LSD, you can go a long time with it safely. A fast way to chunk synchros is with a short shifter and forceful ballistic shifting.
Nice to see The Mule has a new and good home! Congrats! Too bad Jerry is selling his car. Wish I had the $$$$$ See you at the track! Jim
Thanks guys for the fluid updates. It's nice to get feedback since I'm a good backyard mechanic and can bust my knuckles to replace things but I'm still learning all the technical stuff that keeps the car running well. Jim hope to see you at the track soon. I'll be at Thunderhill this weekend for the 2nd USTCC race. I'm guessing you will be at Infineon for the Historics race? Wish they were different weekends I really wanted to go this year. Thanks to my newest sponsor MiniMania for there support this week. Got some new parts for this weekend. I was at there annual open house on May 16th and we put the car on the dyno and found out that I had lost a lot of power. Down to 179whp/135torque. Found a camshaft position fault. also was lucky to mingle with some reps from Niello Mini and they were able to get my car into the dealership and diagnose the problem. Found a faulty fuse circuit and fixed it. Special thanks to Hans Dinse thier service manager for getting me in so quickly and for free! New decals. Sorry Randy.
goaljnky, No MININUTS decal on the car when I purchased it. Will they make it go faster? If so send me 2.
Why, yes they do make you go faster. But we don't just give them away. You have to earn them. //and there is a secret initiation
Yep, I'll be at Infineon. I actually get PAID to shoot this one! Go figure! Have fun at Thunderhill. Hope it's not as HOT as it was when I was up there a couple of weeks ago. 100-105!!! Blech!!:mad5: Jim
Next Race is at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma Ca on June 27 and 28. As always free BBQ and drinks Sat nite. Pit crew always needed so if in the area stop by and help out. Got a new tire pyrometer to play with so Ill be working on suspension setup this race weekend to dial in camber, toe and pressures. vince
