You can play around with octanes, as long as you can get a 91+ reading. 91 is the bare minimum for premium, but I wouldn't use it all the time. That said, you do not have to run out your complete tank before filling it back up with premium [top tier premium is at 93 octane]

I have worked on cars a long time, there is a difference in regular and premium. There is also a difference in cheep fuel and top tier fuel. If I go to a gas station and the pumps run slow, I move on, the reason the pumps are slow is because the filters are dirty. Here is a link to the company that sale top tier fuel
https://www.toptiergas.com/licensedbrands/
When you put regulator in a high compression or boosted engine it can cause preignition. This does damage in the long run. in server cases it can do it quickly. This is why manufactures recommend the type of fuel you use. If you use regular fuel in a motor designed for higher octane and drive like an old lady, I don't mean the little old lady from Pasadena, you may get away with it.
Your Mini does have a knock sensor to prevent preignition but I don't think it can scale that far.
@Evan " I thought fuel might be a factor, but if that was the case, the stumble would happen from the moment I drive out of the garage, not an hour later, right?"
Not necessarily. As the engine heats up it becomes more efficient and the ECU will lean the mixture out.
All that and it still could be something els. Try a few tanks of premium gas. The car has to adjusted the adaptives to the new fuel. Please keep us up with what happens it will help other MINI owners.
This is an important question. What is your first Mod going to be? You cant drive a Mini stock. thats sacrilegious!-

Welcome
Since your car is new take it to the dealer & have them figure out what the problem is. The dealer may already have a fix. You need to get this documented in case it turns out to be something more involved.
One more thing, your Tiguan 2.0 TSI has the same engine as a GTI. It does require premium fuel. If you have a new Tiguan with the 1.8 TSI it may not.-

Hi, Welcome to MA. I wish I could help more but I don't have much experience with the Gen3 cars. @vetsvette may be able to help. I am sure he will be along in a few.

Welcome to M\A, good luck with you problem but I am not a 3rd gen guy.
You don’t have that silly start / stop feature on do you? I test drove one and hated it and pulled over and made the sales guy turn it off ASAP. -

I had watched a documentary on youtube that basically said regular and premium is a hoax. That's why I didn't think much of the recommendation. My wife has a tiguan and works the same with either type of fuel. If the mini must have premium of course I'll use it. I will let it go empty and fill it with premium, and test it. It does seem to work fine with the regular, except the stumble in heavy traffic. Thank you for the input!
